Fun gig last night Last viewed: 3 hours ago

Well I brought out the Gretsch kit for the first time last night. I also went through my entire snare collection to find one that I felt sounded best. I ended up bringing out my Rogers Powertone (which is now fully restored and detailed). It was a blast and a few other drummers gave me kudos for bringing out my "old school" kit.

The only thing I don't get with a lot of other drummers out there is the need to make their drums almost sound dead. Plenty of tape and anything to kill the tone of the drums. I promise you over the guitars and so forth you wont hear a lot of those little overtones and drums are supposed to resonate.

Lots of 'kill the drummer' tempo changes in that one! LOL

The drums sounded great Manny. You are absolutely correct about tone. Pass it on to your peers when you meet other drummers who kill their drums with tape and laundry. Explain 'tone' to them. They obviously don't know.

Go ye out and spreadeth the word! And lo, the word be's, Tone!

Very nice.

The only thing I don't get with a lot of other drummers out there is the need to make their drums almost sound dead. Plenty of tape and anything to kill the tone of the drums. I promise you over the guitars and so forth you wont hear a lot of those little overtones and drums are supposed to resonate.

I try to spread this gospel as often as I can. Some folks try to tune their drums to sound like an album. Maybe they succeed from where they're sitting, but if they're not mic'ed, they'll never get over the amplification.

If I may be so bold …

Not a lot of tom until the end, but the bass and snare are not mic'ed in this video and are right there. (These are the walnut Slingerlands with a COB TDR.)

Because he stands three feet away, the guitarist in this video used to get on me to tape up the drums. But he changed his tune once had the opportunity to hear them from 20 feet away.

Ha ha! Yeah it seems all my bands these past few years have had a female lead singer. This band really has encouraged me to get back into shape. I used to be a body builder and distance runner. To get through our set is a work out for sure. This song is a fast one:

I toned down my playing on this one because I was a little tired already at this point in the set. In other news the painted head I used held up great. A few small specs came off but honestly the same or less then what would happen from a Remo coated head. I used a different paint on this point FWIW.

LOL - Endurance is why I called that number you posted a 'kill the drummer' tune! I always ask bands I play with to save any numbers that are going to burn me out for the end of the sets. If I have to do some crazy double-time thing early on in a set, I'm burned out for whatever follows. Singers do the same thing, they will save voice shredding songs for the end of sets. You can work out anyway because it's good for you, but sit down with the band when songs for sets are being selected and see if you can't make it a little easier on yourself. The bands I've worked with have always been cooperative that way willing to move a tune or two around so that I don't get burned out half way through a set. I also -always- take a B-12 an hour before a gig... for endurance! That and drinking water during the set gets me through two hour sessions without me collapsing. B-12 and sipping water... it works.
