I was watching this one in feeBay and it finished pretty low -

Not the same exact snare as yours, and it even looks like a odd depth

size of 4.5''. Didn't find any mention of that depth Dyna COB in Cook's

Rogers book...

I hadn't seen that - I had actually only looked at the oval badge models like mine, which seem to fetch a little more. I was basing the value on the help I got in the value forum here.

Yeah I think the oval badges go for more, but I was wondering if there is

a huge sound difference between the Big R Dynas and the older oval badgers?

I haven't played on either one so I have no idea, but this is probably for

another topic and forum. :)

No such thing as a 41/2X14 Rogers COB Dynasonic regardless of badge... the seller on that auction mis-measured. That said...

ALL Rogers COB Dynasonics feature a COB shell, regardless of badging, thus they would in essence sound pretty much the same... but ... do they? The earlier shells were without a doubt heavier and of higher quality. The quality of materials did indeed suffer a bit with the relocation to Fullerton, CA. Materials across the board were a bit "cheaper" during this period. Still... is there a difference in actual sound? Hard to say, and completely subjective anyway. I own FOUR early to mid 60's Dynasonics: TWO WMP wood... and TWO COB, both 7 line models. I have played/sold MANY though including the later Big "R" badged models. I always felt that the later models were built with cheaper materials/hardware, and as such just didn't have the same mass as the earlier models. Again... difference in sound? Personal opinion outside of the fact that they ALL sound like Dynasonics... and that is unmistakable!

I have Dynasonic number 13xxx, oval badge, 1968.

I also have Dynasonic number 716068, Big R, 1977 which I have owned since 1979. My first drum.

Stripped both drums down to the bare shell, weighed them. Same. Some differences in the weight of the lugs of course. Throw offs were the same. Frames with wires were close. Butts, eh. Slight differences in top hoops, and naturally differences in the bottom.

While they will weigh differently dressed, they are by and large, Same drum. Given same heads, identical tuning, and original wires, you would be hard pressed to identify either drum correctly while blindfolded. Also, an oval badged drum my be more popular with collectors.. the concept they are significantly BETTER sounding, is BS.
