I was in Guitar Center (our favorite store x-mas3) and was looking around, 'kicking the stand legs' so to speak (they have a LOT of nice quality second hand kits by the way...), and caught a 13X5 snare in the corner with no tag and cast hoops. We wasted far too much time with this drum trying to make it sound good. It had the crap Remo Taiwan heads and the cast hoops were not flat (WTF? It's a brand-new drum!!), which was not helping us... I think I want a deeper 13" drum .
On the used (and abused) shelf were the usual suspects, some nice newer Pearl & DW snares and other stuff, among which was an Acrolite. I really want a super-sensitive, but I was commenting to the kid there that "these are really hard to make sound bad.", and I took a stick and whacked this thing. You should have seen his face!
Now, understand this has rusty rims, a thoroughly trashed (and super-stretched!- no threads exposed on the tension screws stretched!!) Reagan-era coated (well, not the center any longer) Emperor on top, and the original 40-odd year old resonant head and a replacement set of Pearl branded snare wires. In spite of all that, I would not hesitate to use it on a gig as-is, rust and all. It sounds great.
So, needless to say, it came home with me! I had them sweeten the deal with a new Coated Ambassador and a Diplomat snare head. all for $75.00. I think I did OK on the deal (and it is not for sale!), but what do the experts say?
Serial: 312186 (pointy B/O badge that is in excellent shape- not bent)
Date: 21720 (1972 maybe?) paper tag is in nice shape (as are the cobwebs inside)
Model: 404
Dull silver finish, lugs look like they'll clean up fine. Rims are rusty, but will probably look fine from 12" when I finish with them. I think all the tension screws are original too... I happen to have a set of three-hole Ludwig Script snares that I'm going to put on this (sorry- I was going to offer them here!) with the new heads (and less spiders inside) and see how it does. I want crazy sensitivity for pianissimo and brushes and a face-ripping rim shot. I think this drum is up to the challenge (even without the spiders).
I'm pretty happy! The Band
