Classic and awesome Gretsch round badge 4160 chrome over brass (COB) snare drum from the 60's.
The snare is in pretty good condition. The bearing edges are nice and smooth, a sweet vintage round over profile. The drum is within 1/16th of perfect round, which by any measure is pretty much "perfect round" for a snare of this vintage. It has some scratches, grazing and mild pitting over the entire shell, but it doesn't look abused, just well loved. There's one tiny extra hole under the throw where the previous throw was installed. The lugs also have some scratches but they're mostly really quite shiny, the worst one is shown up close in the photos. The drum looks well loved, but still shiny, and certainly full of mojo, and it sounds wonderful. The tone is cutting yet rich, thanks to the brass shell and hoops. A marvellous instrument.
It comes upgraded with the modern remake of the Micro-sensitive throw off. It's the same throw it had coming out of the factory, just the modern version. This iteration of it is really nice, it has a nifty locking mechanism that's smooth and effective. Many owners of this drum choose to upgrade to this throw for the functionality, while remaining "correct" to the drum. The butt side snare adjustment mechanism is original and works very well.
The drum comes with both original die-cast hoops, both of which also show some pitting and scratches, but nothing terrible. The original tone control / muffler is also present and fully functional. Some of the lug mounting washers are replacements.
Like all 4160's, the snare requires Remo's "classic fit" heads, or other slightly oversized vintage style heads. The drum comes with an almost new Remo Classic Fit Ambassador Coated head, a new Classic Fit Ambassador Snare Side head, and a replacement 42-strands set of snare wires.
Serial # is #56006 indicating it was manufactured in 1965 or 1966.
