Flip Cameras

I think they must have the treble set so high that there's no way but to capture the cruddiest high frequencies when capturing a drum performance. When I video'd my performances with my last band, all I could hear was cymbals on the Flip recorder.

Example: I recorded myself playing my newly cobbled together Premier kit. I could barely hear the 24" kick, hear a teeny bit of snare, the toms were nearly non-existant, but the cutting sounds of my cymbals was loud and clear. They also sound a LOT higher pitched than I hear them, and I compared against the Paiste website (for the cymbals still in their soundroom).

Has anyone else had this observation about Flip cameras? I am thinking that the poor audio quality HAS to be a root cause of why Flips are starting to go away...

Cheap cameras generally have cheap microphones etc. Not to mention that drums are extremely loud and tend to overpower camera mics. That being said were you listening to the sound on good speakers or from the device itself? As that would have a huge impact on the sound.

No luck with a Flip. I tried it just by myself and the sound was the direct opposite of sound. Crap comes to mind.

Maybe from a greater distance would help the Flip, but use a better camera, perhaps with external mic's. Can you go from the sound board into a handheld video camera (maybe someone knows that answer)?

Good luck.

Read the manufacturers press on the Flip. It doesn't say anything about capturing live musical performance. It's geared to small gatherings and on the fly friend moments. If you use the tool for what it was designed to do, you usually have better results.

I am just saying that as far as it goes, there are now cameras with MUCH better audio for roughly the same price. Yeah, never figured I'd be filming my band's live DVD or my instructional videos with my Flip, for certain.

Alesis makes a MUCH better camera with VASTLY better audio. The Flip was good for what it was intended, and capturing audio was apparently secondary.

Yeah- the Flip just really couldn't be used for capturing live music performance.

I'm editing myself here.

I suppose I really should have said, "I tried using the Flip, just out of curiosity, to see how live drums would sound". Never intended to make a music video or documentary with the thing. Someone on here may work for Flip and may take my statement the wrong way. Don't want to sound like I'm dis'ing the Flip. (Sorry guy, I don't have time to read Flip "press reports", but hope my self-edit smoothes it over.)

Thank you for making me reach higher.

Man oh man. I reread my post. I sound like a jerk. Sorry 'bout that. It's that very direct, cut to the chase teacher in me. I sincerely apologize for the inferred tone. No harm meant.

RogerSling - All good. I left out important pieces of my statement and wanted to clarify and smooth out wrinkles, if any (you brought that to my attention). Didn't want to offend anyone. That said, I have little time to read stuff I want to read, let alone stuff I don't (sure we can all attest to that).

The Flip is great for PAS situations and I love it for that. I can post many, many, many minutes from my 7 year old daughters softball games to prove that love.

No harm, no foul.

Dammit!!! I thought I could do my documentary of homeless whales who are endangered and being attacked by killer sharks on my Flip.

Thanks for killing my dream, Bill!!!
