Fixing a noisy spring in a Vintage Ludwig Spur Lock Hi-hat Stand

Loading...

Hello Everyone,

I love the Vintage Ludwig Spur Lock hi hats (the pressed steel, non-tubular leg models, anyway). When I get them from ebay or wherever, I always take them all the way apart and throughly clean them, get all the old gunk out of the lower shaft, clean the spring etc. When I put them back together they play great and look great! I've noticed though after a few hours of playing at a gig recently the spring was squeaking pretty loudly. It was the classic "eeeeee-urrrrr, eeeeeee-urrrrr" up and down squeaky noise. I don't re-lubricate the spring at all when I put it back in, because I don't think it really needs it, it's not a bearing or hinge. Here's my idea to fix it, tell me what you would recommend or have done in the past:

What if I take appropriate sized rubber grommets (easily found at a hardware store) and put one "in the groove" at the top and bottom of the spring? That way, the spring is not touching any metal at the top or bottom (the rubber is cushioning it), but it can still compress/recoil normally without anything interfering with that. Do you think that would work? Also, I figure the rubber grommets would help stop the metal spring from "resonating" to make it quieter (just imagine putting a big rubber grommet around your ride cymbal). Do you think that will work?

I also thought about stuffing the spring with some cotton balls, like people do inside old lugs to keep them from rattling. I thought that may pose two problems though: 1. How would I get the lower pull rod through the spring if its stuffed with cotton? and 2. I think the spring action would be affected (reduced) by stuffing it with cotton.

Any ideas, my ears are WIDE open! Thanks!

You'll probably need to use some grease.

Thanks olimpass, but I want to avoid grease/lubricants if I can. The inner shaft is all clean of the 40+ year old gunk from the Ludwig factory. I've taken apart a lot of hi-hat stands in my day, and I noticed that most modern hat stands don't use any lube or grease on the spring.

It's funny, the spring isn't really a "moving" part, in my opinion. It just compresses/recoils, but doesn't really "move", not in the same manner a hinge or bearing would, anyway. I do put a few drops of Tri-Flow on either side of the heelplate where the hinge is, though.

Please understand, that 40+ year old "gunk" is grease that was used in hi-hats and Speed King pedal spring toewrs to eliminate the squeak. That is why use should heavy grease when putting them back together.

When I put hi hat stands back together I pack the spring in white lithium grease. Lots of it. I think that's what Ludwig did. The spring bends out on the sides when it compresses and without the grease it will likely complain.

I use wheel bearing grease when I clean and relube my Ludwig hi-hats....btw, spur-lik is the name of the footboard anchor, NOT the model of the hi-hat. Can we please get this straight once and for all??

Springs are moving parts, btw. They compress and retract up and down...if that isn't movement, I don't know what is! The squeek yo uare hearing is from the spring contacting the inside of the tune as it moves. YOU NEED GREASE! That's why Ludwig put it there in the first place! DOH

For the record, Ludwig hi-hat models with the spur-lok footboard are as follows: classic, atlas/big beat, atlas second generation (or swivel foot), hercules, Atlas II, and Modular up to the mid-1980's.
