0000 steel wool between coats of tung oil. I applied 2 coats but if you want a durable shinny finish, you can go up to 10 thin coats. Drying time if short too.
I`ve used it before, but, was just curious if you cleared it, was all...
Cheers

Tung or any other oil finish is fine, but oils do not stop spill staining from being absorbed into the wood. Clear coating does. Beeswax too, if you spill or get it wet, it will resist but still allow soaking into the wood. Clear coat wont.

Just wanted to show you guys the shell. I stained it this morning and let it dry all day and then I put the first coat of spar varnish on tonight. I'll do another coat tomorrow and another the next day and this gal (they call her Bertha) will be complete! Feeling pretty good about this one.

Yeah... I'd put a couple more coats of stain on.. to blend in the dark streaks... or I'd paint it black and then clear it. But either way. Cool. Are you going to re-inlay the hoops?

I'm not understanding what you mean by darker streaks. I think it may just be the lighting from the photo. I didn't want it to be any darker then what it was already from the one coat. I am not putting inlays in the hoops at this point. The school doesn't want to put much money into this.
