Fibes Crystalite snare hoop questions.

Forgot all about Arthur Press! .. and .. non standard Fibes lugs. Those would stick out immediately if you saw them. Still haven’t ever seen one “in the flesh” personally. Don’t know that I ever will! Tommyp

Ya … those don’t appear to be the Fibes diamond shaped lug, which was their standard manufacture. Unless I’m missing something in that pic? Those almost look like Pearl lugs .. kind of .. to me. 🤔

I actually purchased this drum! Got it on eBay quite some years ago! I'm not at home right now, but will post pictures soon!

I tracked down the original SMALL eBay pictures! I purchased this drum back in 2004, based only on these pictures! I didn't even copy the auction post or how much I paid! But, I believe I got it for cheap! I was able to find the Cannon ad in a Modern Drummer magazine, showing only the 6.5" and 8" depth versions of this drum. Mine was the 5" or 5.5" version. I don't recall the exact depth. The wrap was thin steel, glued incredibly well to the maple shell! I transferred all the hardware to a 10-ply Keller shell, eventually wrapping it Black Glass Glitter and swapping out the Pearl lugs for something better looking! I need to resize the pictures for posting here on VDF, but will get that done soon! Stay tuned!

Mark!

This is a bit of revelation then! Very interesting!, as it more than suggests that the drum Arthur Press is playing in the actual Fibes ad, is NOT a Fibes made/model at all! All it has that is Fibes looks to be the Fibes logo batter .. and .. possibly .. the SFT throw/butt, with the “Spiraltone” wires, none of which we can see. The shell looks to absolutely be a Cannon Universal Percussion WOOD shell, and not even fiberglass. Fascinating! So … the Fibes Concert/Orchestral model snare drum still remains a bit of a mystery! Maybe .. eventually .. an actual specimen may show itself. To date though .. 49 years of Fibes for me .. none ever has. 😳

My Cannon without the SFT

pgm554!

Did you change out the SFT system? .. or .. did you acquire the drum as shown? Just curious! I think the SFT throw/butt is what makes that drum very cool/unusual as it was offered back when. I had totally forgotten about these!, but remembered the ads in Modern Drummer, which I have no doubt we ALL had subscriptions to!

Just resized these pictures! Here's the "new" drum, a 10-ply Keller shell, with all the hardware transferred from the Cannon COW shell. Based on these pictures, the shell appears to be a 5.5" depth.

That is VERY cool Mark! I will tell you .. after actually seeing the throw/butt .. Cannon used the Corder SFT throw/butt. Very similar to the original Fibes, with the main departure being the throw snare tension knob. Corder used a smaller knob, and that is the giveaway as to it not being Fibes. Function however, is identical. GREAT pics Mark, and a nice piece it was indeed! 😎

Tommyp! Great information as always! So, it was the Corder SFT throw and butt? Good to know! Here are pictures of the completed Cannon/Corder/Keller SFT snare drum! I wrapped it in Black Glass Glitter and swapped the Pearl-style lugs for something more modern. The lugs were from DFD, part number DC-012, known as the "Double Ended Bread Loaf Snare Drum Lug". I had to swap out the lower threaded lug nut from the Pearl lugs and was lucky that they fit the new lugs! Another fine drum that I should have hung onto! I sold it back in 2004 and probably not for much. Today, it would have commanded quite a bit more!!
