Ferrels in Rogers B and B Lugged Shells

Loading...

I've recently noticed small steel ferrels inserted into only the bottom lug holes of shells that use the B and B lugs. What was the purpose and why did they only install them on the bottom lug hole? If it was an attempt to stop the lugs from cracking, should I find something similar to install in the top lug holes?

Just do the Pro Poxy repair and be happy. No ferrel is going to fix that design flaw. Only two things will work.... an insert bracket, or the epoxy. There is one other fix, using a screw post that ties the two ends of the lugs together, but it doesn't do much for the stresses on the mount tabs. I am currently working on an insert, but we aren't there yet.

Think it was Dan C or Dan B told me the metal ferrel in the lower hole of the shell was to ease the stress of the lugs pulling on the shell. The B&B kit I'm slowly restoring also has them as factory installed. I don't think it's needed in the top holes.

Yes Sir that's correct Glenn. As the tension rod tries to pull the lug upwards toward the hoop, it puts more stress on the bottom hole of the lug than the top hole. For you "sciency" guys and engineers, you know that the top hole is acting as a fixed fulcrum making the bottom of the lug want to rise upward out of the shell. Explains why the larger washers are only on the bottom lug hole...
