Extreme Drumming Last viewed: 23 hours ago

OK, before I start this, let me make it clear that I'm not putting down these kind of drummers and I don't mean to offend anyone. I just want to know if anyone understands it, I mean, I know these guys have chops and a ton of endurance, but is it really fun to play? I think if I locked myself in my rehearsal room for hours and just practiced this type of drumming, in a few months I could pull off some of this. I've delved into double bass playing and these guys look like they are playing mainly single stroke rolls. It just doesn't look like it would be very fulfilling, I hear no musicality. Does anyone here play or listen to this kind of music and if so what does it do for you? Here's an example of what I'm talking about, thanks.

I agree JR. I love hair metal and 80's rock, Mettalica and bands of that flavor as well, but they all still played grooves, fills and used the double kick as a fill or to add flavor, not as a timekeeper....... i.e. Tom Sawyer and NP's double kick fill in that song.

To each his own, but a buzzing kick drum and a snare cranked to max with rapid fire hits isn't exactly my thing either, although I do enjoy the volume, just not so much the repetitiveness or the singular, full out tempo.

Yikes! To each his own, but that certainly did not groove. There were two or three moments when he did try to groove, but it didn't. He should learn to slow down.

I could not do that in a million years. Chops and stamina, yes. Agree with everyone that it just does nothing for me.

Ditto to all of the above. Unless you play this kind of music all the time, what's the point? No dynamics to the playing, it's all-out, all the time at the same volume and speed. It gets boring quickly. Just doesn't fit my taste in music, or drumming. To each his/her own.

Too many great drums to list here!

Wish I had a smidge of that speed. I'm with everyone it really does nothing for me. I know some are really "wow'd" by this style of playing. Sounds like a machine gun blazin' away. It takes a ton of skill and is impressive. A lot of guys like this I see can have trouble playing in bands. They tend to overplay everything and don't gel that well. And seem to isolate themselves from the rest no matter how good they are. I'd like to see him play a ballad~! Keep on Pl :D

Kinda' like a shredder guitarist. If that clip would've been my introduction to drumming, I'd have bought an Oboe.

Believe it or else!

I've always felt that the extreme drummers are more like athletes than musicians. No doubt what they do is impressive and I sure can't do what they do. But you can add me to the list of guys that don't get it. And I grew up on metal bands like Metallica, Anthrax and Megadeth. The difference between those bands and the modern extreme metal bands is the old dogs actually wrote songs. Now its all about speed.

+1 on what bizz has just stated here as he`s pretty much summed it up.Even in the 40`s and 50`s drummers were enchanted with speed of who could play a roll faster and more evenly than the other(drum battles).Speed has always been one of the main factors associated with certain styles of music but not a really big one on my list altho` i do love it..But i have to keep my mind open to these marvellous speed demonds who have managed to bring the speed levels on the kicks up to their hand speeds, albeit alot of single stroke rolls, but executed very evenly and at blistering tempos(ie:blastbeats). These guys can deliver almost as much with their feet as we do with our hands-not just fast single strokes but all kinds of rudiments and it`s evolving more all the time this way.Interesting to watch these wonderful athletic/endurance/speed players of the new generation.Speed-how fast can we go? Records are meant to be broken and these guys will push those boundaries to the very limits at every opportunity-that`s what EXTREME drumming is all about.Love it or hate it-it`s not gonna` go away...
