ever heard of playing with no high hat?

Over the years I've heard about a lot of interesting setups for drum sets. Three, or even four bass drums, players doing shows standing up, guys playing with one arm even, drums with lights in them, drums with goldfish in them, drums with oddball shapes, and on and on, and on......but I never saw a drum "set" player perform without a high hat, I'm not talking about remote mounted hats, just no hats at all, ever seen or heard of that?

thanks

About 15 years ago while still in high school, I played standing up with only a bass, snare, floor tom and large crash. The band was a rockabilly/pschobilly band. It was fun!! That didnt last very long, only a year or so, but it was a good time. This style, for me, was developed after watching Slim Jim Phantom of the Stray Cats.

Howdy Brewkowski, welcome to the forums.......I tried playing standing up once too I think at the time I was inspired by the Velvet Underground.didn't work out for me........and I guess if Keith Moon did it I wouldn't be surprised, he could make a set of cardboard boxes and pie plates catch on fire... I once saw a player sit in on a jazz gig playing brushes on an empty pizza box, and man I'm here to tell ya it was swingin like crazy!............but never saw no hats

Jay Bellerose is a contemporary drummer on some big name gigs (Robert Plant/Allison Krauss, Ray LaMontagne) who often plays full kit without hi-hats.

Yea, it was hell on the left leg after a few songs!! Also, check out the drummer for Junior Brown (amazing honky tonk guitar player). Ive seen him sometimes just use a snare drum and brushes.

Thanks for the "welcome"! I just joined the forum and hope to post some pics and ask a few questions soon myself. Keep on Pl

Baby Dodds and many of the "New Orleans" drummers played with whatever drum stuff they could assemble into a "trap kit". Many of these guys didn't use the old low boy sock cymbals before Walberg & Auge invented the high hat modification by using a long tube and extended the operating linkage. Then, by the mid forties, hi hats became more essential to a drum set than a floor tom.

No matter how far you push the envelope, it is still stationery.
