I did not like the sound of the Calftone on my C&C Player Date II snare. Due to the shorter sustain it lacked the sound I was looking for. Probably would be good on a metal shell snare. Did not get to try it as a tom head yet.
Evans calftone
I wouldn't use them on a snare of any type. I've got a SKYNTONE on a pre 1920's Ludwig & Ludwig; 6.5x14 solid mahogany snare. The right head for era correct sound and playability.
I generally use a Skyntone on snare and I agree that it gives the drum a much better sound and feel. Just thought I would try the Calftone out anyway.
Thanks for all your input Orangemi!
This from a DFO member:
"Bought some of these new calftone 56 heads a month ago. 12" and 14". First they sounded fantastic, much like fiberskyn but a bitt more open/resonant and also a tad warmer. Loved them.
but then after around 3 weeks(6 rehearsals and 2gigs) they went totally dead on me, lost a lot of tone and got harder and harder to tune properly. The 12" is defo the worst, but also the 14" is struggeling.
All that beautiful life and sound that was in those heads just faded away overnight."
