I haven't really had much experience with selling on Ebay, but I'm thinking of diving in. I'm wondering if you have any general advice as far as when the best time is to have an auction end? What is appropriate to put in the "fine print"? What carrier is preferred for shipping?

Much appreciated...

Probably the best time for auction end would be on a Sat. or Sun. evening when most people are off work and on the computer. Sell the item AS IS unless you're willing to have returns. The type of payment you're willing to accept also. I recommend PayPal only. Fees on where and how you'll advertise your item come into play too. There are many shipping options ...depending on what you're selling would detemine the type of shipping you may choose. Simple items, economy shipping. Other expensive items, with insurance cost more to ship. Expedited shipping costs even more. Get to know what it'd cost you to ship the item and charge appropriately. Usually this is a learning experience you'd tune to your liking. There is lots of info on the eBay site to read first to help you out. Start out selling something simple and working your way up is a good way to get experience.

in my opinion, ebay is still the best place to sell.unfortunatley, they have so many problems and so many fees, that depending on what you sell, you might not make enough money after all the fees (incl paypal) thats wouldn't be worth the time to list something.

they require electronic payments only, they charge you a listing fee, final selling fee and a paypal fee.i just read on another drum blog that half.com (part of ebay) will start taxing sellers who make something like $20,000. or more.i wouldn't be surprised if that transfers over to ebay and other classified sites.sure, most people won't sell that much, but that's not the issue.

i stopped selling on ebay when they went to electronic payment only.and paypal is not as safe as they want you to think. i know many people have never has a issue with paypal (except the fees) but it common knowledge that a buer can cancel a payment after the items has shipped and the seller is out of the item and the money.i know 5 people who had this happen to them.

i hear there's other electronic payment options too,and i'm sure you wouldn't had a issue like what i just described, but i'm just saying do your research.i'm not trying to detour you from selling on ebay.if your going to do so-that's the place to do it.but guard yourself in all aspects.

As for the fine print, try to include your return policy and restrictions on "newbies" bidding. I've always been nice to the incoming folks, but probability has it they will by far cause you the most nausea, headaches & indigestion. I use USPS flat rate for pedals, spurs(madium size items) & USPS or UPS for the big stuff(bass drum). Yes Sir

The most important and easily overlooked facet of shipping is to know baforehand approx. what the shipping cost will be. I bought a bass drum last year and the guy had to add on to the shipping cost twice to break even. As a seller you DO NOT want to be associated with incompetence. Also, you WILL win customers by shipping FAST. Go the extra yard to provide folks EXC service.Party

I end my listings at a little after 8:00 pm Pacific time , which is 11:00 pm Eastern Standard time, on a Friday or Saturday night.

Tons of listings end right on the hour.... I like to give a buyer a few minutes after the hour to get done bidding on other items.

Good idea on the ending time Kevin.

Never thought of that :-)

I like to end on Sunday nite at 10-11 Eastern........

Most people online then I have heard.......

Most of the people in the US are located in Eastern time zone, and I figure people usually go to bed by 11.

And,I think they might check out eBay at the last minute out of boredom. So,they see something they like, they grab at the last minute......

BUT,I have heard recently Monday nites are good too! So,who knows?
