eBay fee structure - for selling - it's bloody rediculous

Well.........okay 12-14% That's good. So why not just have it laid right out.One sentance.............to sellers.......here it is."If you want to sell something here it will be 14% - that will include all ebay & PayPal fees." SIMPLE - NO???

Not sure exactly, Kona... but that seems to be the average for me anyway.

I don't sell any high-dollar items, so maybe it's different for those kinds of auctions.

And yes, it's very confusing to me when I try to read all the particulars on eBay. I just list, sell, pay the fees, and take what I get..... screw the details, I can't change it to suit me better anyhow.....

I do know of once that eBay did go down in a few regions around the country.I know this of course, because I had a Zildjian K ride up for auction at the time... with only a few bids up till the last hour and a half, like a lot of auctions go.Anyway... people could not log on to eBay, and the damn thing wound up having a high bid of $105 !!!They acknowledged that the system had gone down, but couldn't do anything about it because they had "no procedure in place" to deal with this kind of occurrence.

The former eBay exec who is running to be governor of California is airing a radio ad that claims she and her staff stayed in the office 24/7 to fix such a problem AND that they made rebates to affected customers.

Maybe that was after a procedure was put in place.

So you're pretty happy with all the fees?

It doesn't sound like they charge too much - it's just wading through all the information just to find out what the fees are that I'm having trouble with.

Usually simple is better. Whenever I see something at has multilevels for a fee structure when there is no more work involved in the selling I get confused. It's not like they have to wheelbarrow your money - the more money they handle - the heavier it is - therefore more labour involved and more costly....

Do you work for EvilBay by chance?

Nope. I'm just open minded and understanding.

Something every drummer should be if he's going to play with anyone other than himself.

Just my opinion.

I see your point man.....

Fortunately I don't have the problems those high dollar auctions bring.

What are you looking to sell ? If it's drums and similarly priced items, I wouldn't think you fees would be any more than what I have been paying.

In regards to fixed price listings, the cost of the auction is told to you just prior to listing the item.

So I can see what it will cost at that point if the item sells for that amount.

With auctions, you will not know exactly until the item sells because the final price is not yet set.

To be honest, I never really even looked at it in detail because I just want to sell items.

So I would not even worry about it if you really want to sell items, you will know what it costs after the auction. There are ways to plug in the item # and it will tell you all of the associated costs for that listing.

eBay has really tried to simplify this and restructure fixed price and auction style listings.

I have never ebayed, don't like it, but I appreciate the intelligence and delivery of your arguement. Well said, even if I disagree with the entire idea of EBAY.

Everybody hates a winner. LOL Gates, Bush, eBay... the list goes on.Personally, I love eBay. I have been a member since the day it went online and I have seen every change and revision since it's inception. Some I agreed with and some I didn't. However, without the facts, perhaps I just didn't understand the ones I didn't like. How can anyone question the manner and method that eBay uses on final fees without ANY knowledge of the overall balance sheet. Cost to eBay per auction. Fixed overhead. Variable overhead. Cost of server maintenance and shareholer overhead.Without those and a zillion other facts, you simple can't understand eBay's reasoning for their fees.I hear people ***** all the time about eBay. People hate change. They feel secure in their little rut and hate to get out and do anything new or to try to understand anything new.I have over 1000 feedback on eBay which probably means twice or three times that number of transactions. In that time, I made 2 or 3 claims. All ending in my favor. Got ripped once when it first started by sending a MO and never getting the item ($25).In all this time eBay has NEVER made an error in figuring the fees and has NEVER taken more from my account (I pay fees automatically) than was correct. In fact, eBay and PayPal have a better error rate than either of my FDIC banks. LOLI don't believe I have EVER seen the eBay site go down. And, I spend hours per day on it. Every day.I don't mean to rant on but when I hear people crying about eBay I feel like saying...FINE, Don't use it. Go to another auction site. LMAO Yeah, right. Good luck. I use those other sites and I NEVER get the response OR PRICE that I get on eBay.eBay is the best. Their performance is exemplary. The end result of using eBay has always been profitable for me as a seller. As a buyer. AND, as an eBay shareholder. So, they have managed to satisfy everyone all the way around with the exception of those who just can't seem to stand things any way other than the way they think it should be.Like I said, sorry for the rant but, I just think the other story needs to be told as well.Viva la eBay !!!PartyParty

Lots of good information with the replies - thanks guys.

I will have to sit down and read through it again when I'm not in so much of a hurry. Then again - it sounds like I should just list my items for sale....Reserve Bid....and see what happens.

Kevins - I'm trying to sell my Valje drums - they're on Craigslist & Kijiji right now along with some other items including my drums. It is difficult to sell them but I have a very nice shellpack in mind and the only way I can buy it right now is by selling off stuff.........the good stuff - well not all the good stuff. I'd never sell my 58 Gretsch kit. On the face of it - it sounds like I want a lot for the Valjes - but there are special extras regarding history of the drums & the drums themselves. Most of the info is listed at the site mentioned above. A conga history buff will know what it all means I'm sure.

IMO Ebay has gotten way out of hand.....with fees and their policies towards the seller. The buyer can do no wrong it seems and the seller just plain gets screwed. I no longer sell things on ebay and now refuse to buy on ebay as well. Too many morons on both sides of the fence on there now. When ebay started it was split 50/50 with fairness to the parties involved with a transaction. Now....ha! Its so out of whack it isn't funny. I recently closed my account with them, owing them a huge sellers fee bill.....good luck to them in trying to collect it! Ah revenge! :pLoLoLoLo
