On closer inspection the only thing holding the film to the white adhesive backing was the grommet. I removed the grommet and it just fell away with no further damage. ( grommet should be salvageable ).

The shell came up very nice indeed , very happy.. A few scratches here and there but nothing major. Body work is done.. aside from the lug dent there was another below the strainer causing it to angle inwards, this was right over the seam of the shell. I did not trust my hammering skills so just gradually wound it back into shape with a series of wood blocks and a vice.
