Dynasonic 7 line 6.5 purchase. There's a catch

I purchased this drum on Ebay a few weeks back and finally received it this week due to how far away I am. The seller packed it beautifully and shipping cost a small fortune as a result. But that's ok as the drum seems to be a fairly rare piece and I wanted it well protected.

The seller appears to be a well respected devout christian who owns and runs a record label and studio in Texas. He was selling up all his studio gear and the Dyna has been with him since 1969. So all good.

The drum is in decent shape with a few shallow dents behind some lugs and the strainer, the sort you expect on a 60s Dyna that's been well used. My problem came when I went to check the serial number. It's been removed! Hmmm.

I emailed the seller and he was apologetic and claimed he didn't remove it and never even noticed it was gone. I tend to believe him and he did offer a refund. But with shipping costing so much and shipping back costing just as much again it's not really an option.

The price was very fair and I'm otherwise happy with the drum. Can anyone think of an innocent reason the S/N would be removed? I'm struggling. Should I be bothered being that he's owned it for 48 years? (he's checking his archives to see if he has any old photos to verify this).

Perhaps it was already removed when he purchased it. Either way, I would want an affidavit or statement from him saying as much. An email would suffice for me. That might help you if you decide to sell it later.

That's a shame Andrew.. tends to diminish the potential value.. I can't think of a justifiable reason for removal (other than the obvious).. I'm surprised that you missed this on the purchase though..

Cheers

Thanks Mo, I will ask for that. And yes, I assume from my communications with the seller that he bought it this way.

John - The photos from the auction didn't show a close up of the badge and I didn't think to ask. I've never come across this sort of thing before. I could tell the badge was there and could work out a basic age from everything else.

Maybe it was serial number 666? Like you said, he is a devout christian.

Sorry to poke fun. The devil made me do it.:D

Stop stringing and tuning your instrument, make music now.

That badge number is -scratched- off, which means the serial number was -intentionally- removed. It's anyone's guess why it was actually removed from this drum, but the "obvious explanation" seems the most logical one.

Too many great drums to list here!

That is a Dynasonic. Period and an early one because of the 7 lines.

This a typical scenario; last owner was only of of few, not the one since 1960's 2) Probably the badge was a later one such as that the S/N would give the year away so ... by removing S/N no one can tell it was not one of the first. But to what extent I do not know.... Maybe He was duped too....

So you cannot leave it blank... I'd have the local engraver work a nice script "Andrew" on to it....

thanks guys. Stolen many years ago seems the most likely scenario. I think 666 would be too early a number sadly. I really like that idea though.

If I squint I can almost still make out some numbers as the scratching is not very deep. Maybe I'll work out a way of getting them back. In the mean time I'll get some panelbeating done on the shell.
