So I picked up this Duplex snare the other day and, after a quick measurement, thought it was a 4" x 15". However, a 15" head doesn't fit on the shell, so I'm thinking that it's probably 15 1/4", assuming they even made heads that size. I'd like to pick up some heads that would fit. I realize that the Aquarian Vintage heads are somewhat oversized but was wondering if there might be some other choices that would work. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. THANKS in advance for your help.
Duplex Snare - Head Suggestions
Welcome to the world of over sized calf heads....sometimes you will find an old head that will work but that's rare. You can 1. send the original flesh hoop to Stern Tanning and they can mount a head for you... 2. search out this and other forums for guys that can also mount heads for you, Symphony/Orchestral players are good at this... 3. contact Remo, Aquarian, Evans for a special order... 4. Send back the drum if the seller misquoted the size (a very common occurrence with these old Duplexes)... Those old Duplexes are cool drums aside from the over sized heads and scarcity of parts. I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your input, Mike. Your information is extremely informative and helpful, as always. I guess that I'll have to decide whether this one's worth keeping or whether I'd be better off moving it elsewhere.
If its like my Duplex, its 15.5"
If you sell it, I call dibs.
if the flesh hoops are good, read this:

So far I've tucked 4 calf heads and it's not really all that difficult. I was scared to death to try but in the end it was kinda fun to do. Stern heads are really nice and easier to tuck than many.

If you want something different Steele Turkington (member in here) from Australia does some very cool kangaroo heads.
If The Stones hadn't just postponed their tour here, Mr Watts would've had a set.
