Drummer of The Cure doesn't...
Drummers who don't play/use a ride cymbal. Last viewed: 4 days ago
I played for one guitar player for a while and he insisted that I never play a ride cymbal. Played with a different guitar player and he had a fit if I tried to use the hihat. Then another guitar player insisted I only use a ride cymbal with rivets. The next band insisted I not use rivets! These different bands all played rock and roll! I don't think there is a guitar player alive that doesn't think they need to teach the drummer how to play.
Please define Ride cymbal.
I know there are cymbals around 19"-24" that have that name printed on them. Arn't they just cymbals?
It's possible for a rock drummer to surround his kit with so called "Ride" cymbals and yet do no "Riding". Therefore do you pertain that he doesn't have any "Ride" cymbals?

Good question!
I have a hard time identifying cymbals with no writing on them. I pretty much go with my ears, if it sounds like a good cymbal to ride on then I use it, if it makes a good crash sound then its a crash. But I find my self riding on the bell of my so called crash cymbals all the time, I like the sound of that. I would say I use the hats about 60% and the ride cymbal 30% and the bell 10%, but its just a guess.
Thank you!

I try not to use the ride as a ride but most of the times the guitar players wants the damned thing there. I think using the hihat with a little swing here and there (close, open, semi open) it gets the thing heavier and funkier. I love the way Vinny Appice use his ride but I just cannot do it, It sound like he never uses too many notes. A 16 notes pattern sound like 8 notes because he accents the first one and "ghost" the second one…Ive tried to get that thing for years but I just can't…And it sounds HEAVY…Charlie Watts another example of conscious riding: He never fry your ears with 16 notes… A little on the pang, then goes to the no name crash with a huge cut on it…moduling the notes, broken patterns…yes, sr: like a preparing the sauce…Yummy!
Cause you got the bug dont'cha?

Maureen Tucker from The Velvet Underground. I seem to remember an interview where Lou Reed said that he hated the sound of cymbals.
Lars used the ride in at least half the songs on Kill 'Em All. I don't think the ride shows up so much on any other album.
