So I've got a 16x18 bass drum and a 12x13 floor tom I stripped bare of everything, but in the process I dealt a bit of damage to the shells. The adhesive holding the wrap down was applied near the top, bottom, and at occasional vertical strips. When I peeled the wrap off, the wood splintered, and quite a bit of adhesive residue was left, making it difficult to see how I could go about restoring them.

Not a pleasant sight. I'd like to go about applying gray marine-pearl wrap to them and outfitting them with Rogers hardware, but first I've got to repair these shells.
First, how do I get rid of the residue?
And two, will sanding the whole shell help alleviate the splintering, or is there another method I should try?
Thirdly, how can I avoid these problems in the future?
Thanks folks, I'm a noob to drums and drum restoration, but I rather enjoy both! I appreciate any advice you can lend.
