What are drum cases like these made of?

Anything better than other things to clean them with?

Vulcanized fiber. Basically, it's compressed paper that's been treated with a chemical to bind its fibers together. The stuff's moderately moisture resistant but not waterproof, so I wouldn't get it too wet when trying to clean it.

If that's the case, I wonder if Petroleum Jelly would work
