Dream cymbals-what?????

From Jaye

I think their biggest asset is the fact that, for their price, you can get a cymbal which possesses SOME of the more obvious qualities of a vintage handmade B20.I think folks go way overboard when they try to press the issue and say they are "vintage-K like" or things such as that. I cannot particularly agree that they top a nice, Turkish contemporary handmade like a Byzance or an Istanbul, Masterwork, or Bosphorous. I have never heard one which is that complex yet controlled.I find the larger ones tend to be a bit out of control in the wash/overtone dept.; I find the 'hats suffer from too much 'white noise' (which is an attribute of chinese cymbals); but cannot disagree that many do make nice Jazz cymbals if you have limited funds.I have played on sets outfitted with 'em and they were interesting....OK....kinda fun. And yes, overall they do give that sorta Jazzy vibe. But while the impression may be wide, it only goes so deep.Nevertheless, it is a plus that they are on the market...but as this thread shows, certainly not everyone's cup of tea....

We're planning on visiting Steve Weiss music, north of Philly, in a couple of weeks to pick up a Musser M55 vibraphone for my son. It turns out they are Dream dealers and have a large number in stock so I'll have a chance to hear a bunch of them first hand. I'll give you guys my impressions.

From teverson-sr

I have visited a few local music stores lately and tried out some Dream "Bliss"cymbals. What are they good for? Please tell me the vibe/groove these are supposed to fill.I played 4 different cymbals at 3 stores, and they all remided me of the worst Krut cymbals-The Soultone's,on the other hand, were different, much more playable.Let the hornets out.....This is not meant to be insulting in any way.I don't get it.I'm afraid it's an"emperors new clothes"scenario.

Its like the others have said...it's a play and listen thing. There is a wide variance in sound and weight amongst cymbals of the same size/model. This happens with truly hand made cymbals.....much like the original Zildjian K's made in Turkey......they weren't all great sounding (contrary to popular opinion) but when you do find a good one, they sound amazing.

The Bliss series is more of a jazz type of sound. If you play louder rock, the contact series may be the ones to check out. Again, you need to play, listen and then choose the best to your ears.

I have a Dream Bliss Crash/Ride and love it, but they do vary a lot. I think for jazz they have the right qualities, they just need to age and mellow because the vintage Ks and As that we fawn over for that style are just that, Vintage.

I love the Bliss series Dream cymbals. But I have spent a lot of time picking and choosing. They are hugely inconsistent!

About once a year they have a "cymbal tasting tour" around here where they show up at a store with hundreds of cymbals to let you dig through, and a rep to answer questions. That is when I pick mine up. I find you have to hit a lot of them to find the sweet ones. But when you do, VICTORY!

Plus, they are super cheap, which never hurts. If one accidentally gets knocked over it isn't the end of the world.

At the end of the day, if it sounds good does it really matter what the ink on it says?
