DOWNSIZING in the near future - questions? Last viewed: 55 seconds ago

I've recently retired and my wife and I are looking at downsizing the house and pretty much everything else including my drum collection.

If and when I do start to put drums on the block I will post here (ForSale Forum) first because I know some of you might be interested in some of the gear I have. I'm not thinking of selling on eBay....well, that won't be my first choice.

Question: What would a fare asking price be.........putting aside my sentimental attachment to the drums of course?

I have a Cadillac Green rack tom - all original parts and finish. The drum is part of a 50's Gretsch shellpack that I put together. All the drums, except the Cadi Green rack tom have the original date stamp inside the shells. I had the paint matched up as close as possible and the drums do look and sound great. The shells are: 1951 22" bass drum, 1953 16" floor tom, 1950 6.5x14 snare drum. The only drum that I had to drill holes into was the floor tom. It was a tacked reso drum to begin with. I put a tunable head on it and also an era correct mute on that reso side. The drum was already origianlly drilled for the Gladstone era leg supports.

The bass drum is an original Virgin shell. It came from the factory with no cymbal mounts or rail mount..........so it appeared when I received it. I bought it from a Drum Forum member and he also received it with no holes drilled for mounts. The drum had been refinished. It was a Midnight Pearl wrap from the factory. It was damaged inside (ply pulled away) before I received it and when I bought it it was 'bondoed' over. I removed all the bondo and repaired the drum and it is good as new........especially with the new Cadi-like paint job.

I would like some guesses to what you think is a fare price please. Just the drums with the hareware......no cymbal stands, hihat or pedal.

I have a figure in mind but I'll let the experts here have a go at this before I let that one out of the bag.

Thanks,

Gary

Okay then.....

I'll start ....

I have about $2800 into the kit..............

Is it worth that? I don't know................maybe to someone. It sure is to me. I think if I were to sell it I would ask at least $2500 for the kit.

I would have said about $2500, but prices have been weak lately.

Gary - as stomp-down beautiful as those drums are, I don't think you'll be able to get back what you have invested in them. At that price point, there are just way too many kits in 'original' condition for a refinished one to compete. What the kit has going for it, is it's age, (great era for Gretsch drums) and that superbly done Caddy-green paint job. I'm thinking $2500 for the 'high end' of the price, (starting point asking price,) bottoming out between, $1800. to $2200. I could be wrong, but I don't think you'll get many/any bites at $2800 which is what you're in for.

Man, I love that kit, enjoyed watching you cobble it together. Hope you end up keeping that one, but best of luck if you decide to sell.

You rarely, if ever, get back what you put in when it comes to a refurb. Just a fact of life... and one I've accepted.

John

Too many great drums to list here!

Yes - John, good information - thanks.

I think I would ask what I put into it and then think hard about what is offered - if any.

The original Cadillac Green tom is the best drum of the lot. It is 100% original down to the 24K gold hardware. I think the virgin bass drum is the next best part of the kit. I was tempted to put a cymbal and railmount on it but just did not have the heart to do that. I haven't seen any other 22" 50's (this one 1951) 3ply Grestch bass drums that don't have anything mounted. This drum has the original Spurs so it was not a Parade drum. There may some or lots out there but I have not seen them.

Right now I have a TRS Cocktail kit and Ludwig 16 floor tom (1965 WMP) for sale. I was asking $450 for the floor tom but I'd sell it for $250 now. The Cocktail kit is listed at around $2000.....the manufacturer told me recently. The drums are made in Ontario Canada and are solid and pretty. I'd sell the kit - it's like new....for $500.

This is a start for my drum reduction........oh yes...there are my Valjes. Way too much money for anyone other than a serious collector that wants exactly what I have. Although I have reduced the price by 1000's in the past few years.....still no serious bites. My last offer was to drive the Valjes into the USA ....as far as Portland Or. to save a buyer shipping. The shipping from Canada to the USA is a lot....these drums (the Valjes) are big and heavy.

Gary, I love that Gretsch kit!

I have no funding for that investment unfortunately.:(

The virgin bass and original rack tom are super-cool, but the kit you made from those random drums is just great in my eyes. Playing a single tom is only fun for so long...Cool Dude

I have to think there is a PLAYER of drums interested in great drums for a fair price. COLLECTORS/INVESTORS will not pay the big bucks because they just want to flip them for fast cash.

"I would if I could" Gary! I just can't swing it. Best of luck with your overall downsizing, and particularly this sale. I hope they go to someone who will appreciate them!

Regardless of how people might feel about the guy (I dig him), it seems that Maxwell might be a good broker for this kit. Not sure he would be interested, but it's such a cool refurb and a very unusual one at that. He might. It's worth giving him a call, I would think. He would have the skinny on those looking for one of these. Higher take on your end, I would think. Whatever direction and path you end up taking, I wish you the best. This is one for the books.

Great point/idea. Get that kit in front of the "Right" eyes, with the right avenue. Would be interesting to hear SM's take on what you've put together, there.

Best of luck, all around.
