I was wondering if anybody has tried to do this before and I figured this might be a great place to ask this question. I am putting together a 20's - 50's mahogany kit, which will be a mix of various makes - very much like Fred Young of the Kentucky Head Hunters. The kit will have (2) 14x26 bass drums (Ludwig Pioneers), a 12x15 marching/field snare converted into a floor tom (WFL), a 12X17 marching/field snare converted into a floor tom (WFL), and (2) 14" marching/field snare drums used as rack toms cut down to 8x14 and 10x14 respectively (Slingerland). My question is this - has anybody here ever created a double rack tom stand using two snare baskets? I want to go this route as opposed to adding mounts to the two rack toms. Just curious.... Just so you know what the kit will look like, I've attached a picture of Fred Young's kit for reference. Mine will be almost identical except I will have two rack toms.
Double Tom stand using twin snare baskets
I've never seen or heard of it being done, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't do it. That's actually quite an ingenious, out of the box idea. You'd obviously want to use a pretty sturdy base.
With all the different types of multi-clamps available, it shouldn't be too terribly difficult.
This the kit that I was thinking on adding the extra rack tom to. This is my version of the Fred Young drum kit.
I would go with two rims mounts on toms using a free standing mount with two L-arms.
I would recommend the rack route also like K.O. suggested. Gibraltar has got a ton of flexibility for your kit. Also with the 2x26" I would look into their Ultra-Adjust Legless HH stand so the toms can be more centrally located over the big bass drums, while building in some flexibility/ergo relief for the HH over a traditional HH stand/set up.
