I'm in search of another kit, found these two and I can't decide.

1) Ludwig b/o badge, wmp, 3ply clear interiors, split on floor, 12,13,16,22-$1,225 shipped.

2) Gretsch RB, silver glass glitter, jaspers shells, two extra holes on tom, 13, 16, 20-$980 shipped.

It looks like the Gretsch's have been modified with Ludwig tom mounts on the bass & tom. Although, they may have been ordered without mounts and added by the dealer.

But, they are RB Gretsch's. Probably sound great, I still miss the set I had.

I think that is too much for the Ludwig's with a finish flaw and a common finish on top of it..

The tom mount on kick is a Ludwig, but it fit into existing holes, so the 13 is the only one with two extra holes

Had that identical Gretsch set back in the day. Had a hard time finding heads that fit (too tight). I’ve seen this issue addressed on this site, though, so maybe that isn’t an issue. Just thought I ‘d mention it.

How about the sound? I've had my share of 3ply Ludwigs, but the only Gretsch I've owned was a 70's era. I know how Ludwigs sound and what their limitations are, I don't know the same about rb Gretsch drums.

Another kit just popped up on the radar, but this is a modern kit, made around 2008.

Ludwig Classic Maple, blue oyster pearl, 12,13,16,22-$980 shipped.

I usually don't do modern, but this one looks too cool.

Always Ludwig Jonny always being a b/o badge puts it on the edge with rings or not , I’d say no contest if it has rings

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

Totality of the circumstances... I'd go with the modern Classic Maple kit out of all of those. I don't usually say that, but with the issues presented on the vintage kits, I think you will get more "bang for your buck" and be happier overall with the Classic Maples.
