Cymbal Patina: Does it change the sound?

Loading...

From mbettis

I put a light coat of Lemon Pledge on my new cymbals. It oxidizes the bronze very slightly, just enough to help keep finger prints and other patina in check. In an old Modern Drummer, Paiste also recommended Lemon Pledge. I have tried cheaper off-brand versions, but didn't have any luck with them. The only down side to the Pledge is that it makes the cymbals a little slick, so be careful no to drop them.Later,Matt

Thanks so much for answering this. I believe it has been answered and suggested before - but it is hard to effectively search for such a specific question. Also - searching for 2 words (both) - don't think the search function can.

Thanks also for the specific clarification - must be Lemon Pledge and no knock-off.

I had a great day! Instead of sleeping in and wasting the day, I got up at 8 and I had all my slacking done by noon!

I recently had great success with a ride that I cleaned.

60s 22in Zildjian A

Was disappointed when it arrived - only paid $74 for it shipped. Dirty & alot of patina...was dry and lacking that 'pretty' sound the classic Zilly A Ride lends to our music. Was beginning to wonder if I should have went with a 70s 20in instead of the 60s 22in.

Well, though many people would adore the dirty filth & patina it sported - I decided to clean it up with BKF and get down to what the maker intended for us to hear.

I was very pleased when it just came to life - it has complexity that it lacked before - as now the fine lathing could now do its job. It still has the big 22in old Zilly sound and indeed has more sustain (preferred over the deadness it had before).

Now it sings with class - and my objective has been met. Don't mind the keyhole and punction wound on the bell, as I have been advised by many that they are harmless and fact is - the bell ROCKS on this - loud and clear and a big target - just like I have always wanted in my vintage B20 classy ride.

This will now get some Lemon Pledge to maintain it's squeaky clean beauty!

Forgot to shoot a good before - but the during shows enough of the before. BKF rocks (even at the several hours it took!)
