Cymbal keyholeing

Loading...

Can I ask opinions about how keyholeing on a medium sized ride cymbal would affect sound/ projection etc. I'm researching paiste 602 rides for big band stuff, any opinions? Money is very tight, there's one on eBay cheaper than the rest but the keyhole is quite big. Lee country music is the seller if anyone cares to look.

Man that's a decent keyhole... But you should be aware of seller's reputation... not too well liked on this forum..

Cheers

John

The one I'm using realy is a beautifull cymbal 22" 40s zildjian trans stamp, unwashed!!! It is nearly perfect but I'm thinking I just need a bit more 'cut/ stick/defenition' projection but still to be warm not to harsh or washy. Sometimes in this band there are up to 28 players.

item number: 271990160725 I presume. Jonas is wanting $181.35

I'm not sure that the keyhole would have that much sonic effect, and I'm not generally scared off my keyhole. I've got some bargains that way which are excellent cymbals. But...

That's what I would code as bad keyhole (examples I use in this link):

http://black.net.nz/avedis/holes.html

which lowers the expected price. I haven't re-calibrated my pricing models recently, but you can read up here on my earlier work:

http://black.net.nz/paiste.html

where you will find the expected price range for these from 2006-2013. Jonas is asking about the median price for one which isn't in good condition, so I'd say it isn't really a bargain. It may only appear to be a bargain because there are some other sellers on eBay who have relatively high prices attached to some 602s. But asking price isn't selling price.

Given his reputation, I wouldn't even consider it. And I've heard enough reports of him invoking his shipping clauses:

We reserve the right to send you a 2nd invoice for any s&h shortage, especially if we have made a listing error. ... Please note that ebaY allows vendors to charge s&h. This includes the actual shipping plus handling which covers rent/mortgage, fees and commissions, labor, packing materials and other boring overhead such as [power] and water. If you do not agree with this policy, please do not place a winning bid.

to suggest that he might make up any price reduction by adding more for the shipping.

I've reported him in the past for questionable practices like possibly selling to himself under one of his multiple accounts. I had no follow up from eBay, but that's par for the course. I only noticed that cymbals were appearing as sold in one of his accounts but then appear for sale under another of his accounts because of the extensive monitoring I do. Not to catch Jonas out, just as part of my data collection for my research.

Known Jonas eBay IDs: = leecountymusic, thedrumpartscounter, theolddrumshop, p00der2 (changed to leecountymusic).

Note that I can't be sure that he was doing shill bidding because eBay doesn't make enough information public anymore to be 100% sure. But I'm sufficiently suspicious to avoid his accounts. His history also got me wondering how he maintains such a high positive feedback rating and in part that's down to multiple accounts as well. One can "rest" an account which gets too much bad feedback because once a year has passed the older bad feedback isn't included in the top level statistics.

How about this one (not mine). Not in great condition but the price is right and it'll probably still sound cool. http://www.drumforum.org/index.php?/topic/118939-20-old-602-wkeyhole-and-fixed-crack/

That's an interesting one Andrew. The price is right at $50 plus shipping based on what happens to 602 prices when bad faults happen to them.

A cut out that size has no major effect on sound, despite what you might think.

The only thing I'd want to be sure about is that the discoloration on the sides of that cutout isn't from overheating during the cutting process. Otherwise the new owner might be looking at redoing the work making a bit bigger cutout to get past the area where the tempering has been affected.
