Cymbal dampening techniques

Loading...

From time to time when recording and such I sometimes find my 50's/60's Zildjian A's a bit too washy and they need to be toned down a bit.

Just wondering if you guys have any effective tips/techniques to dampen your cymbals. The thought of slapping gaff tape on them makes me cringe.

I have seen people use moongels on their cymbals before. I would assume that would accomplish the same thing as duct or gaffer tape.

For recording it may not be the cymbal, it might be the mic as well as where you are doing the recording. Carpet, concrete, furniture, etc. in the room and placement of the kit effect the recording. Empty room, Surrounded by concrete? You may want to throw down carpet or hang carpet (or foam boards) on the walls. Kit in the center of the room? Move it to a corner, faced in or out, for the better sound.
