Craigslist In Your Area-What's the vibe?

Loading...

I'm not a social media user, so I don't use or look at Facebook Marketplace.

I browse Craigslist daily and wanted to hear some opinions about what you think the vibe is in your area.

Here in Cincinnati, a friend of mine told me once that "If something is more than $40 on Craigslist, no one wants it, no matter what it is". Of course it was said jokingly, but he's pretty much spot on.

I list things occasionally at very reasonable prices. People constantly try to talk me down or give me insane low ball offers. It's crazy! I swear I could list a Turkish Istanbul K that belonged to Elvin Jones in perfect condition for $100 and everyone would try to talk me down to $50. That's literally pretty much how it is here. I will list things at very good prices, probably too low, and I'll either get zero interest or low ballers. Everyone wants something for nothing around here!

And of course I see the same stuff all the time, like the Pearl Export kit that's missing heads and looks like it's been dragged by a truck for 100 miles for the amazing low price of only $1300. It's one extreme or the other around here. Virtually no middle ground.

What's the vibe like where you are?

CL is pretty much the same here. I see the same instruments listed for months and even years in some cases. There's a guy in NYC who has been trying to sell a red strata Walberg & Auge set for something like three years now. Some of you guys will know who I'm talking about. His price goes up and down, depending on his mood, I guess. I think he's at $800 now. The set belonged to his former drum teacher. IMO, I don't think he wants to sell them that badly.

But, yes, the used gear thing on CL is a joke for the most part. I've had all kinds of gear listed since December with no success. Some of it is also up on Reverb, and still no takers, and all of it is priced fairly.

Heck, I have a sweet MIJ Stewart set right here for sale and nobody is interested. Now, I know things are bad.

I can't believe that kit hasn't sold. That's a very reasonable price for a very nice kit.

I'm also stunned at how long some things are listed for, and honestly, I don't think the prices are that bad! People seem to want things for nothing. For me, if I like something, and it's in the right condition, I'll pay the price, but I seem to be the exception.

It's pretty much the same here in San Antonio. I've had some success selling a few kits and getting close to my asking price, but sometimes you have to negotiate with the buyer to close the deal.

Btw Drumbob, I was really close to buying your kit because it's so gorgeous, but I want a second kit in smaller sizes.

I will go a bit lower on the price for anyone interested, and I already have shipping boxes!

I've sold quite a few items on CL in my area, which is the San Gabriel Valley area of Los Angeles. Yes, everyone wants an absolute bargain and want to pay pennies on the dollar for what things are worth. I keep that in mind when listing things. I've met really nice people on CL, probably because of the type of items I sell...stereo, computer and drum related things. I've gotten NO action with that beautiful Rogers kit that I refurbed and will have to resort to eBay.

Still, CL can be a great way to sell things...sometimes!!

Wow, no action on that kit in a place like LA? I'm surprised. You put some real effort into that kit and it looked very nice when you finished it up.

Hey JS!

Yes, it's a great kit! It's been listed here, at DFO and CL. I get lots of compliments, but no offers or interest. The owner is aware it will take time to sell. I really want local pickup and believe there is someone out there in the greater LA area that this kit will appeal to. Next stop is eBay...even if that means giving up some profit to all the fees!!
