Confused about Ludwig ply construction

I have had this kit, stamped inside with "3/96", and "March 1996" in the bass drum, for a few years. I have been assuming that the shells are 4-ply, based on what i can see, and on the fact that they're pretty thin and lightweight, compared to what i have seen with the 6-ply "classic" shells. Upon looking at the bearing edges more closely, i'm second guessing my reasoning, as it seems that there are more than 4 plies, depending on how i look at it. The latest catalog that i have is the '94, but there are no pictures of the shells, just descriptions and labels of "classic" 6-ply and "super classic" 4-ply. I have tried all the resources i can find online for info, but can't find any clarification. Can anyone tell for sure what these shells are? The pics below are of the 13 x 12" tom.

Thanks!

I'm not up on the newer shells like I would want to be. It looks like a thin interior ply of maple(?), two large plys of a lighter colored wood, then a large ply of Poplar(?). I would then think that under the wrap there is a thin play of something else as well? Sometimes those large light colored plys can be two plys put together though. Sorry to be confusing!

It's actually a stained wood outer ply, not a wrap.

Thanks! It's funny though, the other drums (12, 16, 22) don't have the "bird's eye" appearance, just straight grain.

On a side note- I bought them used as toms & bass, mint condition from a large national chain retailer . A few months later, I bought a 6 1/2" supra, also mint condition, in a different music store. The supra had the 3/96 date stamp also, so i'm thinking they came from the same original owner who ordered it as a 5-piece, but sold them to two different shops. The 12 & 13 toms had factory installed RIMS mounts, with no other drillings which were an option for kits at that time.

I am thinking there is a thin outer ply for the stain.

Just to add to the confusion.

When is a 4-ply not a 4-ply? When it's a 6-ply! Except when it's a 5-ply. Aaaaarrrggghh! I give up.
