Concert Tom Kits

Loading...

I am into the idea of concert toms but I don't have any. I have been toying with the idea of taking my bottom heads off but only for recording. It seems like concert toms can work especially in a controlled environment. Sometimes you don't want a long 3 dimensional tone, you want something quick with no overtones. I am excited to try this in my little home studio set-up with some gated reverb... Not that concert toms only work for the Phil Collins sound.

I snagged a 20" floor tom off of ebay several yrs ago. It was listed as a rogers. When I got it it didnt have a rogers badge on it, but it did have swivomatic hardware on it. 4 Legs. After i joined this forum I figured out it is a slingy. Nevertheless, I tried to use it as a cocktail drum, but never could get it to sound good. In the process of looking at other cocktail kits I found a slingy expresso kit with a 16" floor tom/ bass drum on ebay, and bought it. it sounds much better than the 20" did. I guess I just didnt have the right heads on the 20" There was a 22" luddy floor tom on ebay a few weeks ago! it was a monster!!!

I have a kit that contains pieces of an Octoplus kit.Ludwig 24/8/10/13/15/20.Yes...that is a 20" floor tom! 20x18 to be particular. The cool thing about this kit is the options it allows me. I have used the 20" FT as a bass drum, as cocktail drum and a good ole' floor tom. In addition, I can play around with various tom combinaations for different situations. Now, I haven't gigged this kit in a few years...but...I like having options. Here is a pic of the monstor rock configuration.24/15/20[Attachment: 14896]

Ive had luck using a Aquarian Super Kick II for the batter and a Aquarian resonant head. Using the 20' sounds more like a bass drum to me than a 16".

I have a 6-ply Luddie 20". At one time back "in the day" (80's) I used it as a floor tom with an 18 with 8 10 12 14 16 mounted toms, yep a 16 rack, I could barely see over it.

I have also used the 20 on my left as a floor for more of a gong drum, saving it for those "special" moments....

I only have two words in response to this thread: Phil Collins.

I totally agree!

One reason I started this thread was that I was on tour with a "New" rock band last year and one of the drummers (The Butcher) on the tour had a custom SJC Drumkit...ALL Concert Toms. He purposely designed & ordered the kit this way. We got to talking about the drums (which sounded great) and he said to me he always wanted to play a concert tom kit.

Imagine my surprise...here I am on tour with my Ludwig Super Classics and there is this 20 something year old guy rocking a concert tom kit!

I'm now totally contemplating bring one of my concert tom kits out on tour.

Did I mention his drums sounded great?

Thank You,
