Compare Paiste Sound Formula Sound Edge with Paiste 602 hi hats

Loading...

I have a pair of 14" Paiste Sound Formula Sound Edge hi hat cymbals and a Pair of 15" Paiste Formula 602 hi hat cymbals. I would like some info comparing them. I really like both sets of cymbals, but am leaning towards the Sound Formula pair. The have the round Paiste logo and have serial numbers 141396 (top) and 664918 (bottom). Also would like an estimated value of each pair, because I might sell the ones I don't keep. That's a hard choice because I've had the 602's for 40 years, and I just acquired the Sound Formulas (they are quite old, too) from a friend. I should mention that the top cymbal of the Sound Formula pair has a 3" crack that I drilled and filed out so that it won't spread -- in spite of that it still sounds great.

Apples and oranges...602's are B20 alloy with the honeycomb-type hammering. Sound Formulas are B15 alloy with different hammering. The alloys produce different sound characteristics....

The SF's are sound edges...very crispy and crunchy. The 602's are not.

Hard to really answer as to which is "better" or more appropriate...depends on what you play.

As far as values ~

The 602's are worth a hella lot....$300 at least and possibly closer to $400.

The Sound Formulas were worth a hella lot too, being original old ones...

....until you mentioned the crack...which, quite seriously....makes them worth almost nothing as a pair. The bottom, being a sound edge, would be somewhat enticing to a Paistephile who may have a pair of standard SF's...so you could probably grab about $100-150 for the bottom.

But the top quite seriously has a market value of maybe $20-50 absolute max.

Thanks for the insight. Strange as it may seem, the Sound Formula with the "carved out" crack (I've attached a photo -- if it works) has a better "chick" sound, perhaps because of the hole. At least I like the clean sound that I get from it. Granted, the 15" 602's are awesome cymbals, but I still lean towards the SF's.

The sound edge (ripples) is what gives you that nice chick. It also gives a great half open sizzle. I've got 602 Sound Edge hats and they are great that way.

Median expected price for 15" 602 hats was $250 if you don't know anything else about them. That analysis comes from here

http://www.cymbalholic.com/forums/showthread.php?30271-New-Paiste-602-SC-value-rule-of-thumb

however it is a year old. Since then I have recorded more sales but I haven't updated my full analysis.

Prices are all over the place at the moment. It's like eBay sales are being chaotic like the stockmarket. Since my rule of thumb was published I've recorded some 15" hat sales and if you look at these which are for black label

fo602 15 hats excellent black ebay 5-Nov-09 $450.00 BIN strong logos

fo602 15 hats 1 excellent black ebay 21-Dec-09 $697.99 BIN strong

fo602 15 hats 1 excellent black ebay 3-Apr-10 $299.00 2 gone

and these for preserial

fo602 15 hats 1 good preserial ebay 29-Jan-09 $237.57 12 gone ships intl

fo602 15 hats good preserial ebay 12-Mar-09 $223.63 14 gone

fo602 15 hats good preserial ebay 16-Aug-09 $300.00 22 gone

fo602 15 hats excellent preserial ebay 4-Dec-09 $362.11 3 gone

fo602 15 hats 1 good preserial ebay 1-Jan-10 $349.00 BIN gone

fo602 15 hats med heavy 1 excellent preserial ebay 5-Mar-10 $399.99 1 gone

fo602 15 hats 1 excellent preserial ebay 22-Mar-10 $405.00 3 gone

fo602 15 hats excellent preserial ebay 23-May-10 $462.77 15 red ink only

You can see where things are at these days.

If you read my full rule of thumb you will see that blue label and pristine logos add 50% expected value. I don't know anything else about yours from what you've said so far. Given the crack in the top hat of the Sound Formula pair they are worth much less. In my analysis of cracked or repaired pairs (based on years of data collection) they would be expected to sell for half the price of an intact pair, and Sound Formula hats are worth a bit less than 602s. So if you like the Sound Formulas you should sell the 602s. However, today isn't a great time to sell. You might want to put them away until things settle down.
