Cleaning of an old Multi Clamp (Tama MC6) - Page 1

Hello,

I recently bought two old Tama multi clamps, obviously the MC6, which they produced from 1980 on. I assume that it's either cast or made of Aluminium?

First trials of polishing with Autosol paste brought just a little shining - not a bright shine like I'm used to see on chrome parts.

Is it a good idea to leave the clamp in Cola (containing diluted Phosphoric acid) or Acetic acid - for a certain time?

Has anyone experience with one of these acids? Please don't recommend other acids, as I don't want to buy a chemical just for the cleaning of these two clamps.

And also, please, don't suggest other polishing materials which might be available in the USA, only.

Time consuming but I have used a hobby size rock tumbler to "polish" parts in the past. Different grits to gradually get the look you want.

The MC6 was Die Cast aluminum. It never had a shiny finish. It was basically is as cast finish with some grinding marks from removing some of the casting flash.

The one in this Reverb listing shows pretty much how they were originally.

The best way to bring it back to close to original would be to have it glass beaded or better yet, blasted with plastic blasting media. The Plastic blasting media will restore the original finish better than glass beading because it doesn't remove any metal.
