I bought two new toms in 84 to match my 4 piece set. A 10"and a 12" and yes the jammin sam stuff is the same as those . I think the pre yellowed stuff is as close as Im gonna get to the original 66 set. I bought it in 79 and I have a pic someplace of it them. Ill try to find it and see how much its yellowed since then
choosing white marine pearls
For the sake of comparison. My '70's 6 ply Luddies......
It's always gonna be a compromise, because the fade on any White Pearl (be it Marine or Diamond) is variable as to the conditions the set was kept in, among other things.
The only way to get a perfect color/hue match is by using Drummaker's custom color wraps....I have successfully done this with Slingerland WMP (or maybe it's WDP? ;)) which tends to fade greenish a lot of the time.
I found a custom hue via Drummaker which was an incredibly close match to the 50-year old kit....Now, fortunately, with Slingy, the Pearl pattern was such that the pattern of the new wrap was also a good match.
With the Luddy triangle-sorta Marine Pearls, however...you have no such luck; as Drummaker doesn't deal with that particular pattern...so you cannot customize the hue to match....
Thanks to the original and subsequent posters for providing good visual examples. This thread should be informative for a lotta folks.
Did you try looking into the color wrap from drummaker, you should be able to get an almost exact match to the floor tom, you have to buy a whole sheet though and it cost $153.80 per sheet.
That's a brilliant suggestion ! Clapping Happy2
.....;)
The problem with the Drummaker wraps, as I noted above, is that I am not sure they do that on the Luddy-style WMP pattern.
I think they only do it on the more random-pattern Pearls.....
Maybe this has changed recently, but as of about a year ago, they didn't offer that style of Pearl in the custom colors....
Why not just buy a vintage WMP snare to match the rest of your kit?
