Charle Parker and BR "Celerte" 1950

Loading...

First off credit to drummerbill for posting this on DFO. Think this is one of the finest example of less is more playing. Of course now need to put together a Buddy bop kit. The correct cymbal part will be easy :-).

Anyone know what brand the kit it is? Hope some one has more footage of him playing this setup.

Thanks !

Creighton

This might be the same kit. Only audio.

Nothing special here but I like them.

Looks to me like it could have been a WFL kit with Premier mounts and stands, or it could have been an English brand like Premier or Beverley. Tough to tell. Either way, he's miming in this clip for TV, so he most likely recorded it in the studio using his regular WFL kit at that time.

Creighton!

There are no other film/clips of Buddy playing this set that I have ever seen, outside of the one you posted here, which is not all that rare. It's been available for viewing for quite some time! That said ... LD is correct in that this entire visual performance was dubbed/mimed to the pre recorded track done in the studio. The drums are 1950's WFL's as Buddy was endorsing them at the time. Ludwig/WFL made this "little" bop set up special for Buddy as during this period he had gotten away from playing big band and more into the popular small groups of the day. It did not last long! No one seems to know just what happened to this little set of WFL's .. however! .. take note of the snare drum that BR is playing here. It's the 1949/1950 WFL 3X13 Buddy Rich be-bop which Ludwig/WFL built for him at his request. This particular snare drum is the starting drum in my 1950 to 1982 Buddy Rich snare drum collection. Buddy liked this drum!, until he didn't, as I am fond of saying. He returned to his standard size drums very quickly after this film and also returned to the 5.5X14 Ludwig/WFL Buddy Rich Super Classic snare drum, not playing the 3X13 again. He DID use it for a while though, including some sessions with other artists, such as Charlie Parker shown here .. but .. with his regular sized set. Here's a pic of my 1949/1950 WFL 3x13 Buddy Rich Be-bop as shown in the clip ...
