I recall an MD interview in which said he loved the drums but that the hardware was "absolute rubbish ... and you can quote me on that." I remember thinking 1) what refreshing honesty and 2) he probably won't be playing Gretsch much longer.

I also recall an ad from that period in which he was reclining on a set of Gretsch (walnut?) concert toms.

V>2k I believe Carl was playing Premier kits around the time of the first Asia Album. I saw him in 82' with Asia. They were a chrome over wood double bass kit with two up two down. They looked great and he was his usual incredible self. I wished he was playing his Stainless kit though!
