Vintage Rogers 14x20 Holiday Bass Drum in Steel Grey Ripple

Wrap is in stunning shape. Virtually no fade. Edges and shell are in excellent condition. Fullerton paper tag present with serial: 22915

Chrome is in very good condition with some normal slight pitting on a few lugs.

Heads are original. 4 small extra holes where a carrying handle was added.

Bass drum spur mounts have been removed and holes plugged. Easy remedy, or just add clip on spurs - (I have a set if interested).

Previous owner added a rubber caulking to the interior lug screws. I removed some which only took a few minutes, but ultimately I decided it wasn’t worth the effort.

I can almost understand the handle. But, as for the bass drum spurs----WHY?

If "necessity is the mother of invention", I'd really like to know what necessitated and motivated the owner to do this!!!

I thought I'd download and size the pictures for everyone to see. Interesting...to say the least!!

Maybe the drum was used as a concert bass drum, or horizontal on a stand a la Moe Tucker?

I have not been able to find any pictures of the drum set that Bobby at the Drum Farm offered for sale a few years ago. The drums were a blue sparkle mix of WFL and Ludwig from the 1950's. The bass drum (20"?) had spurs for conventional playing position. That bass drum also had relatively short floor tom legs to position it horizontally to serve as both a cocktail-style bass drum and a massive floor tom. There were mounting brackets on the bass drum's shell to mount a small tom and cymbals, cowbell, etc. for playing in either the horizontal of vertical position. I wish that I could recall the name for that drum set. I damn near bought it from Bobby.

Perhaps owned by a street musician who stored additional instruments inside the drum when moving to a different location? This would explain the caulking to prevent scratches and removing the spurs, but then wouldn't the inside paint be scuffed up?

Too weird.
