When I was younger and really trying to be Keith Moon-esque more often than I am now, I emulated his love of relatively light sticks (i.e. 5A) and even went to sizes smaller than 7A at times to try to help speed up my single-stroke fills.
Later on, when I wanted to improve my double-stroke techique in the long saga of learning Steve Gadd's famous pattern from 50 Wasy To Leave Your Lover, I started using heavier sticks (i.e. the SD1s I currently own) to help with rebound.
So I've played anywhere from light jazz sticks to marching sized ones (the latter really help make ANY regular size feel tiny afterwards!) over the years, though somewhere in the 5B/SD1 range is my current comfort zone. The few times I've played mismatched are usually grabbing whatever demo sticks are available at music stores! I can adapt but it's not ideal, lol.
