I have an Oaklawn Camco bop kit (18,14,12.) and I have been thinking of a re finish. The kit was originally a natural wood finish, but, when I got it, it was wrapped in green sparkle. I gigged it hard for about 10 years, and it is showing it. Right now I'm thinking of removing the wrap, sanding it out, and having someone shoot it with piano black lacquer. Is this a good idea? Or should I leave well enough alone?
Camco advice
If they were mine, I'd try to bring back/restore the original natural wood finish.

restore the original natural wood finish.
Another vote for the natural wood finish, looks classy w/ that hardware
Or, if you're still into green, try to duplicate Camco's Moss Green stain/lacquer finish.
Sounds like a fun project. I also vote to take them back to natural wood but that will depend on what yo end up with after removing the wrap. Get the wrap off, then we will decide.

I'm with the rest of the camp here, Natural wood, oh soo sweet !!
I would suggest being extremely careful removing the wrap as the outer shell ply should be a fantastic piece of wood. Then ship those shells off to Jeff for a spectacular finish.

The guy I bought the drums from said that when he got them the finish was too far gone so he wrapped them. I guess the moment of truth will come when the wrap comes off. Jeff who?
OK. I figured it out Jeff is jcabinets.
