Building an Acoustic to Electric Hybrid

Loading...

Hey guys, first time posting. I hope I found the right forum for this sort of thing (not sure if people talk about electric sets here). Basically, I'm wanting to get back into drumming.

More then anything, I'd love to have an electric drum set that looks, feels, and plays just like an acoustic. Me and my bro have been looking into options and I could use some professional opinion on what we've come up with.

My brother insists that I get a cheaper (or used) acoustic set, seeing how I'm going to be swapping the drum heads for 2 ply black mesh heads and using electric sounds. For my own reasons (pride and appearance), I want to stick with a decent set that is sturdy and plays well on its own. Anywho, getting to the point.

I'm thinking of using a Matt Black Tama Imperialstar 6-piece set, made with poplar. I also plan on purchasing Jobeky drum triggers for all 6 pieces, as well as Jobecky Brass electronic 13'' hihat, 18'' ride, and 3 crashes of varying size (all prebuilt with triggers and choke). An Alesis dm10 drum module would handle all the inputs. Some extra stuff that I'll need such as two cymbal stands ('throwing out' the 3 cymbals that came with the Imperialstar).

All this comes together for around 2.5 grand invested into making a electric drum set that looks, feels, and plays like an acoustic (a pretty metal looking one at that).

I've done all this with hardly any knowledge on building sets and I really need some pros to give me some constructive criticism about this, because for all I know, I could be missing some very crucial things. Thanks!

I know nothing about electric drum kits other than playing a couple at the local music shop but, I certainly like your initiative and "thinking outside the box". Please let us know how it goes. Looks like you've done your homework. Fingers crossed for you, amigo!
