I purchased a 22" ludwig bass drum hoop last week and went to put on my 67 ludwigs this weekend. as I was tensioning the head the hoop split. anybody have any ideas on how I can repair the hoop?
broken bass drum hoop
A photo would be most helpful, but simple yellow carpenters glue and a couple of clamps is all that is needed. Don't release the clamps until the glue is absolutely dry. Sanding, touch-up paint, good as new.

i have it glue and clamped now thanks. I was wondering if that would be strong enough, so I was wondering along the lines of maybe putting a couple of small staples as well. what do you think
I can't make recommendations about using metal clips unless I can see the damaged area. But no, under most circumstances, the glue will do the trick. Again, without being able to see what you're talking about, it's hard to make recommendations of any kind. You know better than me... if you think it needs additional reinforcement, then do it.

thanks John I will let you how it turn out with just the glue, if it splits again I will post a pic. thanks again for the help
If you use the glue correctly, applied to both surfaces, and then wait just a little bit and clamp it properly, until the surfaces mate flush _ the glue joint will be stronger than the wood itself.
I would advise against adding any mechanical fasteners _ it will just muck it up and possibly create additional problems.
Best of Luck with the repair.

John and Ohm57 are absolutely right!!! I have been wood working for forty years. A well-glued repair is like scar tissue on skin. The glued joint and the scar are stronger than surrounding areas. A broken bone will usually not break where it has mended either. Never mind the staples. Your hoop should be just fine.
