Bought a 1940 Leedy bass drum on Thanksgiving

I bought a huge Leedy Bass drum on Thanksgiving. It measures 18"x28". It is dual tension, original Leedy cowhide heads, black finish, Elkhart Indiana badged.

It is stamped 8-40 inside.

No it really is 18" deep. It may have been a special order, it measures 21" across, out side rim to outside rim. i took the rims and heads off and the shell is 18' deep. I'll post a pic with a tape measure across it. Its in fair condition, coupla slightly bent rods, pitting on the rods and claws, but it is complete . maybe a one of a kind? It sounds GREAT. I put 4" felt strips on both sides. It just sounds beautiful. I'll try to figure out how to post a pic, since I've never posted pix on the forum.

I sent you 2 pix to your gmail with the Leedy next to my 14x24 Luddy bass. It looks like a baby, in comparison. The drum appears to be mahogany on the inside. It has a clear lacquer finish. Its beautiful. Crazy thing is, the Leedy is very light. The 24" Luddy is noticeably heavier. The Leedy is stamped 8-40, on the inside. I'll have to get some low res pix. I'm trying to adjust my digital rebel to take a lower res photo, but not having any luck, yet.

That's a beautiful Leedy kit you have there. It must sound awesome! Now, this Leedy bass drum wants me to find some Leedy orphans for it to watch over.

I was very lucky. Got it on the local Craigslist, 15 minute drive, $125.00, cash. It had been posted for going on 2 months. Started out at I think $225.00, kept watching, saw it marked down in increments, when it hit $125.00, I pounced!!

Nice find! Bet it'll sound great. Wonder if it might've been a concert bass since those tend to be a bit deeper than drum set basses.

Yeah, I like the sound. I'm gonna try it out with a band we're getting together, just gotta go with a light touch. Also included a Leedy clip on muffler. I think it probably was used in a school orchestra. I'm using 4 inch felt strips under each head. It has a very nice sound. The house hasn't collapsed, just shifted off the foundation, a little.
