Bop kit session

Loading...

Ok so finally it is released, I have been given credit and yes it was for an old band. Their new drummer for whatever reason twice in the studio could not settle into playing with a click. To me when I heard the tracks it seemed like he struggled with the tempo itself. I will admit the tracks I did were even sporty for me! Anyway two takes each track and a total of five hours later I was done.

Gear used:

Sonor SQ2 in vintage beech shell build out

10x7 Rack

14x14 Floor

18x14 Bass

Ludwig LM402 (an early 80's B/O badge)

Fun part is I challenge anyone to tell the difference on the 3 other tracks I used my larger Prolite kit on.

When I saw, bop kit secession, I was expecting a small jazz band, I thought, why would you need a click track? To be honest, I couldn't tell the difference between your kits under all those distorted guitars and the songs had pretty much the same groove. Your playing was good, nice way to work up a sweat.

Well done Manny! I loved playing that fast in bands years ago, luckily I get together with a few guys once a month and belt out Clash tunes. It fills the gap :)

Those tracks all used my bop kit. Yes I guess after all the other tracks mixed in it is hard to tell. Here is what I would have changed on this session:

1. Blanket over bass drum

2. Two mics on the snare

3. Overheads lower for more stick definition on cymbals

4. Two mics on the bass (for more click on the attack or beater hits)

I understand now the reason for triggers. There are some licks I did that were very fast that just didn't come out as clean as I had hoped.

Main reason I posted this way was to put to rest the idea that a jazz sized kit could only be used for Jazz. I really believe with a great system and sound man I could easily play this kit in a live setting for rock. Maybe only the smallest air vents for the reso side and an internal mic in the bass to help.

I will say I think the days of me playing a 22x18 are long gone. 22x14 or even 22x12 is just fine. The delay I feel in a 22x18 and the pain they are to haul in small clubs really turned me off to that size. To that end my first Rogers 22x14 bass really made me believe in that size.

Anyway get yourself a vintage beech sonor SQ2 in traditional sizes and be happy. Funny the same shell setup I got hooked on is the one I ended up back with.
