Bolero Drums

From Lissy

Hi Jonni!I indeed took note that the other one´s were Pearl. No doubt about your facts, but in your last post you stated that Pearl had written Bollero and Star had Bolero.I never wanted to challenge your knowledge - just wanted to show that at least on the badges of my kit it´s also written Bollero, although it´s a Star. No harm meant! All the best,Jurgen

None taken! I was unsure whether you had seen kelly's kit. These silly name games are driving me nuts sometimes!

Hallo Jürgen, glad to note that you're still into vintage drums. To be political correct, your bass drum reso head should show the 'Bollero' logo instead of the Star one - nevertheless, the Star logo is more nice ...In the meantime, since our last contact, you've been successful in buying a 10 lug snare drum (if I recall right, you were searching it once)?Greetings,Ralf

Hi Ralf!

Nice that you chimed in here!

Yes, I´m still into vintage gear and I think this won´t change for the rest of my life! (Quite the contrary, I increased the number of items in my collection - but, sssh, more about this later on...x-mas3)

Regarding the political correctness: As Bollero was a line of Star, I think it´s correct to write it on the front anyway. OK, they were badged as Bolleros, but for me they´re still Stars. Btw, the BD had the original Bollero-signed head on it, but unfortunately it was destroyed when she was thrown into the trashbin:mad:

And - no, I didn´t buy another snare. I´ve been looking for a while, but then thought the same as you once told me: I already have a King Beat snare. And the only difference between mine and yours is the parallel strainer instead of a normal throw-off, and I found out for me that it´s not worth spending more money to have another snare lying around... And above all, she sounds great and I love her as she is. Plus - she´s the matching snare that originally came with the kit.

Greets, Jurgen

That´s fine! Thanks for leading me to kelly´s post! You couldn´t know that I had been reading through the whole thread before posting a comment...

Yes, sometimes I believe that we´ll never know for sure what´s been going on back in the day...

I was given set of these Bolero drums. No one that i know, and i know a lot of drummers has hard of these. I have recently stopped drumming in order to focus more on school, guitar and singing. I need to sell. I am just wondering if these drums are actually worth some seeing as they are so old, maybe collectible? My main questions are; what are these worth right now in there condition? or would it be worth it to possibly restore them then sell them?

Help2

Thank you band2

They are a diamond blue and the bass drum is missing one head. the snare is not original i do not believe. but the other three pieces are.

Depends on the condition over all: any extra wholes? Any modifications? Any chrome pitting? Any genuine hardware parts? An uploaded pic could tell us more about it's value.

I also have a Bollero set of bass and three toms. It looks very nice with it's dark and semi-sparkly theme as you can see in the pic. I've never seen a similar set.

I've had it for about 5 years now and I'm not aware how many owners there have been before me. It seems during the years some parts e.g. lugs have been replaced with non-original ones but as I'm not an expert, for me it's hard to say which are genuine and which are not. I haven't had the need to replace any parts myself.

The previous owner had tried to transform the middle-sized tom into a snare but didn't accomplish that. So the middle-one has a couple of holes drilled to it, which is a pity. I always played with two toms so it didn't matter to me at the time I bought the set.

Also, the bass drum and floor tom threads are in pretty poor condition, so they definitely require restoring.

I quit active playing few years ago and now I feel the set needs a new loving home. I believe the best it would serve a collector or someone who is interested in putting an effort in restoring it. So as above, I'm looking for someone who would appreciate the set and give it a good home.

As this thread is pretty much all you can find about Bolleros, I decided to post here first. Your help is highly appreciated.

Hello,

This is a beautiful drumset.

From the first pic, it looks like the bottom lugs of the bass drum are genuine (I mean the longer ones, we call them 'shark tooth' lugs). The shorter ones (at the reso dead) are not Bolleros.

Also at the second tom (from top) the bottom lugs appear to be original.

The shape of all lugs should look the same at your drumset (like 'shark tooth'), and the ones at the bass drum are generally longer.

Also the T-rods (those tension screws at the bass drum) appear not to be genuine. Perhaps THEIR (!) threads do not fit exactly into the lugs (and the threads in the lugs are still intact?!).

I'm not familiar how many members we have in Finland. Would you consider shipment overseas (as e.g. to Germany)?

Ouch, sorry for the months delayed response. I still got the set so this matter is still on the table.

Thanks Ralf for the quick analysis, I'm not too familiar with drum part terminology (especially in english) so giving names and descriptions to the parts helps the communication a lot.

By "threads" I actually referred to the base drum and floor tom leg mounts which have pretty much wore out. The legs are fine though.

I should probably list the faults the set has (with the terms I know) and take a whole lot of pictures to explain a bit better.

For sure I could ship overseas if someone's interested.

Again, sorry for the awfully late response.
