Best snare you ever owned/played? Worst?

Loading...

I was just wondering what was the best/worst sounding snare you ever owned/played...my best was a 67' Supraphonic with 8 (not ten) lugs. It had a more wide open sound then the 10 lug Supra's. I brought it to the Chicago show in 01' and showed it to John Aldridge, who told me it was a "Monday Drum" (meaning it was probably made by a guy who was hungover) Anyway I sold it to some Swedish guy for $175.00 (this guy was buying every Ludwig Supra at the show, he must of had close to a 100 in a big pile, wish I could remember his name so I could contact him and buy it back..oh well..)The worst sounding snare I ever played was a Gretsch "Max Roach" or "Progressive Jazz". Got rid of it fast.. Does anyone know how the current crop of brass Supra's (LB-400-B) sound ? How do they compare to the regular Supra's (LM- 400 ) ???

I remember that dude from the '95 show. He and a chum were flashing

a stack of Franklin's @ any and all things Ludwig.

And Slingerland, and Gretsch, and...

Never met a snare I didn't like ;) Although I did trade away a 4x14

Tama Rosewood that for one reason or another never seemed quite

"right".

Looking back, that could well have been operator err.

Cheers!

I can't really speak for alot of older drums, but I really did like a '66 Supraphonic 10 lug I had years ago. Not at the top of my list though. The best snare I've played and owned is a Mapex Black Panther hand hammered 14x6 bronze snare. I have yet to find a snare as sensitive as this drum and as loud. It's a great snare that can be used in any situation. The worst I would have to say was a Pearl Chad Smith signature series snare. The snare springs broke 1 after the other, it wouldn't stay in tune, and it was pretty basic and had a horrible sound. I know these drums aren't vintage, but that's what I've found with newer snare drums. That Supra put alot of snares I've played to shame!! I did have the pleasure of playing the new Brass Supra you mentioned and I gotta tell ya, it sounded great!!! I don't really have the experience to compare it to alot of other Supra's but it was good enough sounding to make me want to add it to the arsenal. (expensive drum though and I didn't have the $$$$ to spend on it)

Jan 24th, 1964 gold sparkle Ludwig 5.5" X 14" Pioneer...original Weathermaster heads...original snare wires...P-83 throwoff...6 Nickel-plated bowties...red felt baseball bat muffler....immaculate condition in the original gray "suitcase".

Either of my Supras are also great

My Acrolite is fantastic - a real workhorse

I love my Arbiter snare drum

The worst? -By FAR a Gretsch 6-lug drum (I don't know the model) HORRIBLE drum!

Also a bad drum for me was my 1975 Rogers Dynasonic. I could get it sounding "okay" at one dynamic level, but then if I hit it hard, it would just choke. If I loosened the snare tension, the snares wouldn't choke, but then they also didn't respond when I changed to a soft dynamic level.

I owned it for years...tried every available head combination and it was always the same. It ****ed me off because it looked so damn nice and it was obviously an extremely well-built drum...just didn't work for me. I sold it several years ago and never looked back with any kind of regret.

I pretty much like to play all drums no matter what they sound like

Eversince I first got my hands on a 14"x6,5" Pearl Free Floationg brass snare I've been in love with that snare. I love everything about it, only complain I've heard about it from fellow musicians is that it's to loud but that aint my problem...:D

Tied for the best is my '66 Supra and my 2004 Brass Edition Black Beauty.

The worst? A late eighties Pearl I played at Opryland. I don't know what model it was but it was a cheap one.

Best...My 1963 COB Dyna-Sonic which I bought new and still play every day.

My 1963 Red Sparkle Wood Dyna which I also bought new and was later stolen.

Worst...1958 Gretsch BDP six lug bought new with the set and hated it (loved the set).

I've got a 6 1/2" keystone Supraphonic from '69 which is a real gem (mind you I can't actually remember ever having played a bad Supra). Also have a Camco 6 and a bit (around 1/4" but not quite) which I'm pretty fond of.

"I sold it to some Swedish guy for $175.00" - I'm pretty sure I can guess who this is.

Hey chasvint if you liked that 8 lug supra, have you ever considered buying an acrolite, its more or less and 8 lug supra, with the same shell and what not.
