Best affordable vintage crash-ride cymbal

Loading...

I'm trying to find a good vintage crash-ride (or a ride that crashes well--whatever) for hopefully less than $125. I've heard Paiste 404 20" rides are good for crashing on and are really cheap. What else?

My kit is a 1965 Slingerland Aqua Satin Flame kit with 1970s New Beat hi hats. I play in a rock band. Looking to have just one cymbal.

60s A Zildjians are the way to go - plentiful, affordable, and proffesional grade.

agreed. there are usually plenty of vintage avedis zildjian 18" cymbals floating around on ebay or wherever. these are real versatile cymbals. can usually be found for less than 100 bucks. good luck...

Yup vintage A's are the way to go. I'd think you should be able to land a 20" for 100$ or so. Make sure you play it first though. Weight is only a rough indicator of crash/rideability.

good point. i mentioned 18's because most that i have played could handle both functions. but on a 20, certainly play it or find the weight. not all of those,by any means, would be great for crashing.

Another thing to mention. I think the 20" Paiste giant beats absolutly nail that vintage rock and roll crash/ride thing. I prefer the originals to the reissues though I suspect both will be out if your price range. I only mention it because if you like the 404's the gb might be more your flavor but perhaps lighter (mire crashable) mine certainly is. Sometimes it's worth waiting till you have the funds to buy the right gear rather than settling. Just my :2Cents:

Cool, I was wondering about the Zildjians, they do seem to be abundant on eBay and Craigslist. Thanks for the help!

I found a 16" hollow logo A at a pawn shop for $40.00 and it's a superb crash/ride. I was surprised, so check the 16's and you might be surprised too.

+1 for the Paiste 404s. I had a 20" ride that I'm kicking myself for selling.

+1 for 60s or 50s A Zildjians. There are plenty of 18s and 20s to be found in your price range. Be on the lookout for odd sizes, too. 19" and 21" As seem to always be nice. I just picked up a 22" locally for $100. Couldn't be happier. It wobbles like a K Light Ride...
