Beater Kit

Loading...

I'm thinking about buying this kit for $100. I want to have something to take to certain gigs and not use my vintage gear. It has a 13,16, Percussion Plus tom and floor, a 22 Pearl Export kick and some crappy snare that would not be used.

Can a kit like this be made to sound decent? I don't mind the black finish, but I'm worried the kit will sound terrible. I have some new Remo black dot heads I think will help with the sound.

Any thoughts?

once the brass ceases to glitter, and the drum looses its luster, and the stage remains dark, all you have left is the timbre of family.

You're too good for this kit. This is meant for a beginner to bang on in the basement.

You're right, so I'm going to buy this Slingerland kit for a few hundred bucks more. I sold it about a year ago and the dude who bought it started working at Sam Ash. We started talking and he told me he was going to sell it because he bought a new kit from Sam Ash. He's going to sell it back to me for what I had sold it to him, $500. I gigged this kit for a year and it will be good to have it back again.

If was actually just looking for a cheap kit to use for some gigs and keep the Leedy safe and sound in my rehearsal room. Then the satin Slingerland popped up and since it's a players kit and the price is right I figured it's not only a better investment, but a better kit to gig.

I'm digging the Leedy too much to flip, but I do like flipping drums, so the Slingerland will be the one to fill that need if the urge hits me for something different.

I bought an Enforcer kit for $50 on craigslist, slapped some coated Ambassadors on it, and tuned it. It sounds fine. Enforcer is on par with Percussion Plus, Rockwood, Fender Starcaster, Sunlite, etc. I can leave it at a venue and not worry about theft/the place burning down.

The truth is, you can put some decent heads on a beater kit and make it sound more than passable. The vast majority of the audience will never know the difference--a drum set is a drum set. The only difference, really, is OUR perspective from the driver's seat. Is that worth buying expensive/vintage/specialty gear for? For me, yes, in most situations it is. For the situations that I feel uncomfortable using the more expensive/rare gear, there's always the trusty beater gear I can depend on.

That last statement of a drum set is a drum set is not even close

1. No set made out of cardboard is equal to or sounds as good in private or with a band of a well made quality wood or fiberglass or acrylic kit .

2. The heads choice does not make a kit it helps but not the same .

3. Drums are drums is a very broad statement if you take a trash can and put heads on it

Some like it but it’s still not the same so a drum is not just a drum,......

I was able to get this MIJ kit to sound pretty good and that's an Asian made Ludwig snare.
