Batter head for an 18" Floor Tom?

Loading...

Hey Guys,

On my Rogers Big R set, I have Evans J1 heads on the batter sides, per Ploughman's advice, and Remo Ambassador clears on the resonant sides. I have recently bought an 18X16 floor tom and went to get an Evans J1 head but found they are not made in an 18". The tom is 3 ply with re-rings.

Any ideas on what would be the closest match sonically to the J1 head? It does not matter to me what brand, I would just like it to be white, etched, or frosted to somewhat match in looks from a distance.

Thanks,

Wes

I sent an email to Evans and they suggested the strata 18 (ct18s).

I'm wondering if a lighter head on an 18" is the way to go after reading a few comments in the past of folks saying sometimes there really isn't enough head movement on an 18" to get a good sound with a drumstick. Maybe a Remo coated diplomat is an option? I'm not a heavy hitter.
