No, Ludwig may have been the first when they put their logo on Buddy's set in 1923....

That must be the last known photograph of Buddy with his own hair.
Ludwig was putting small waterslide decals of their logo on their bass drums well before Ringo showed up on the Ed Sullivan show. A look at old ads from before 1964 quickly verifies that. Not sure exactly when they started doing so but I'd guess it was 1959 or 1960ish. Ringo's first Ludwig set from 1963 came with the standard logo decal in place on the front head but it began to chip off the head until it just read "Lu" (there are numerous photos showing it like that). At that point Ringo had the logo replaced with a painted one that was done in a slightly different and larger font. The "Ed Sullivan" head was a Remo with an even larger logo painted on it at the same time as the Beatles logo. This was the head Bill Ludwig saw on tv and was surprised to see the company name featured so prominently. For some reason in later years his story/recollection morphed into this being the very first time he ever saw the logo on a bass drum, which was clearly not the case.
Very first time he saw it SO BIG :)
