There's a few YouTube's with him appearing "solo" on some tv shows. Most of the time they'd have a terrible drum set for him. Almost always double toms on the kick (did they ever see him play?) and Buddy's grace in accepting the sets was contrary to his grumpy reputation.

MbbW it's very probable he did play that gig alone. Buddy had a Ferrari and the band drove in a Greyhound so they weren't always in the same place.

Thanks for all the info and clarifications guys! Very much appreciated, Im putting together a short presentation this weekend to introduce my information to my class mates. You guys have really helped me expand my historical knowledge and personal interests a lot.

Now i just have to get some nice pics of my WFL's with all the new (older) cymbals ive got recently. I have a dark rehearsal space so i may have to bring them to the light.

For my sources i got the Traps book, and a book by Terry Gibbs with some stories in it. I also got the book Down Beat. Numerous youtube clips and a few newspaper clippings. Im required to include primary sources so i think il use some of the interviews i found and music clips...for my cultural "artifact" theyll get to see what a real drum kit looks like! haha

Maybe you’d like a personal anecdote about Buddy Rich from an old timer. About 55 years ago, I took drum lessons from Stan Katz, who had been a neighbor to Buddy Rich when they were teenagers. He said that Buddy would set up his drums on the tenement balcony and drive the neighbors crazy while he practiced on them. I was always amazed to hear Buddy play, he was a one-of-a-kind. When I was young, I played swing, jazz and, of course, rock and roll. And drumming has never gotten out of my blood. I’m 76 and still playing the drums – albeit, rarely, but still playing and loving it.
