I have an old ludwig snare stand, I'm pretty sure it's an atlas. the problem is that the protective sleeves on the arms have split. Can anybody suggest a fix for this problem

From makurtz

Get a can of that plastic dip at the hardware store for tool handles.

No offense makurtz _ but those cans aren't really big enough to fit the claw arms of a snare stand in I don't think _ unless you'd want to buy over a gallon of the $$tuff _ and I haven't seen it come in black.

An alternative is to use black Friction Tape _ NOT the more prevalent plastic electrician's tape.

Friction Tape is the cloth type used on Baseball Bat handles and is non-sticky after a day or so, it will protect the drum from scratches and is widely available at most hardware and home centers.

The result will of course be less finished than the factory plastic /rubber sleeves _ but it will allow you to salvage and safely USE the stand.

I had the same problem with my Preimier snare stand and I went to Lowes and found some rubber tubeing that I cut and slid over the metal arms.

I used the clear rubber tubeing and it works fine. Cost maybe a dollar.

I'm going for the record for the worst looking, beat-up old snare stand, still in regular use....lol I got this with my used WFL's in 1965. It looked then much as it does now. I still use it, rock-solid, light weight, and I have complete faith in it, to the point that I won't use anything else. Not even really sure just what it is, Atlas?

The rubber protective parts were not on it in '65. I decided last year, maybe it's time to do something about that. Picked up some vinyl tubing at Home Depot, cut to length and force fit on. Like new.....lol I think the whole roll of tubing was like $ 3.00.

THUMBS UP !!! On BOTH of the answers ABOVE.

OK _ I will admit that that slipping the clear tubing over the arms _ is a MUCH BETTER idea _ than wrapping with Friction Tape as I had previously suggested.

And Batterhead _ I have a stand exactly like that, the thing is built like a tank _ and I have no idea who made it either.

Happy Thanksgiving to ALL !!

the plastidip I just bought at Lowes was black and would easily work with the Atlas stand tips. It might be too small for the older style stands but even those you could buy an empty quart paint can and lid and buy two cans of the plastidip and fill the paint can. It is pretty much what Ludwig used originally.

I figured I'd search the forum before starting a new thread. So anyone have success with the Plastidip snare stand trick? I'm hoping to bring a 60s Ludwig back to life.

Now here's the controversial part. Because of the nature of this site, please don't be upset. But what if I use a color other than black? I'm sort of thinking gray would look cool for the rubber parts.

jdz, gray sounds cool, go for it. sounds like thin shell had success with it.
